Connor, Leslie. Crunch. Katherine Tegen Books. New York. 2010.
Crunch is about intelligence and creativity by a famous and well known children's writer Leslie Connor. She has written many books, but none of them are as good as this one. The age range of readers for Crunch is from eight to eleven. Leslie Connor has won many awards for her outstanding writing in her previous book Hamsters in my Garden.
Crunch is about a little boy who always gets into trouble. He gets in so much trouble that his mom decides to ground him. He hates being grounded and decided to run away with his dog. One day, he gets so far from his house that he reaches a bridge. This bridge is right above a river with vicious piranhas. His neighbors do weird things to scare people so he decides that the piranhas are probably just plastic and put there to scare people. He lowers his feet into the water.
“OUCH, I’ve been bitten!” he said trying not to cry. He tried to run back home but it hurt too much. He came up with an idea to put all his weight on his bike and push off with the foot that didn’t get bit. It worked for a little while but he kept falling. He was hopeless. He screamed at the top of his lungs. Then all of the sudden he heard a response. He was saved! At least that’s what he thought.
He looked towards a big forest and saw two little eyes pop out. His heart skipped a beat and his face turned white as snow. He couldn’t stand for much longer. He closed his eyes and laid there in the grass. He was awaken in a strange house. He looked up and saw a strange looking thing. It was a dwarf!
Leslie Connor did a fantastic job at leaving the reader feel all the emotions the boy was feeling. Crunch is a great book for beginning readers because it doesn’t have too many big words, making it perfect for a starting book.
