Stroud, Jonathan. The Golem’s Eye. Miramax Books. New York, NY. 2005
The Golem’s Eye, by the great author Jonathan Stroud, is a fast paced, fantasy action/adventure book. It has inspired readers all over the world since its release in 2002, and has become a New York Times best seller. This is the second book of the Bartimaeus Trilogy and has sold almost 30,000 copies.
The Golem’s Eye takes place in the unknown universe of Bartimaeus, where there are dragons, cyclopses, goblins, elves, talking animals and more. A group of humans named Xavier, Jedediah, and Alphaeus who travel from Earth to this far off universe in search of the Golem’s Eye. They had been searching for mythical items that could bring them power their whole lives, and the Golem’s Eye was exactly what they were looking for.
Once they arrived at the universe of Bartimaeus, they had no idea what they had got themselves into, but they were still determined to retrieve the Golem’s Eye. It was known to grant the holder all power to the universe. The Golem’s Eye was guarded by a large talking blue oxen. This oxen was almost unbeatable because he was granted super strength to guard the eye.
Later in The Golem’s Eye, the group of people come up with many more ways to get hold of the eye. None of them work so they have to come up with a new approach other than killing the oxen and stealing the eye. They had to use their smarts, something that they had over the oxen, to get hold of the eye. But was their greed too much for their smarts to overcome? The reader will have to find out for their own.
The Golem’s Eye is a real page turner that will make anyone want to read it for hours and hours. It really makes the reader feel like he is inside the book because of how the author describes the universe. The author also asks the reader questions to get him more involved in the book. Jonathan Stroud does a great job of making this new universe so realistic and interesting.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
