The Silver Crown
Robert O'Brien
O’Brien, Robert. The Silver Crown. Aladdin Paperbacks. New York. 1968.
The Silver Crown is a classical story of love and imagination by the famous Robert C. O’Brien. The novel has been a favorite of all princess lovers since it has been created. This love story, about a princess and a farm boy with big imaginations and dreams, has captured the minds of readers for ages.
The Silver Crown is about Lucy, a young princess, who is being forced to marry her “soul-mate,” according to her father. But Lucy meets a boy who works for them on the farm. She starts falling in love with him. She has to face her father and convince him that the farm-boy, Sam, is good enough for her.
Lucy’s father thinks Sam isn’t good enough for Lucy because there is an old silver crown that Sam must wear if he marries her. If he puts it on, he must wear it his whole life because the crown has a magical power that curses whoever puts it on to wear it forever. Lucy’s father wishes she would marry someone wealthy who would love to have the crown, but Lucy loves Sam and she will do anything for him. She decides to runaway at midnight to be with Sam and bring the silver crown to show him what it’s like. Lucy gets past the gate, when she trips on a stick. As she arises, she finds her father standing above her. Shocked, Lucy’s father grabs her, brings her back to her room, and locks the door.
Lucy’s mother visits Lucy and asks why she would run away. Lucy tells her mom that she is in love with Sam, and no matter what her parents tell her to do, she will always try and be with him even though he doesn’t want to wear the crown his whole life. Lucy’s mother tells Lucy the truth: her father was in the same situation as Sam when he was young, and his parents would never let him marry Lucy’s mother because they didn’t want him to wear the crown his whole life. Only until his parents died in an earthquake was he able to marry her.
Lucy confesses to her father that she knows about this situation. Her father finally tells Lucy that she may marry him, only if she promises to make him king and wear the silver crown. The next day Lucy must tell Sam, and she just hopes he will say yes. She is scared Sam might say no, because once you put the silver crown on, you can never, ever take it off.
Robert C. O’Brien’s classical love story, The Silver Crown, touches everyone who is big on romance. The reader will experience that true love is real. The beginning is dull because the writer didn’t get the point across, the middle and end will excite you. This book is not a book to be put down on the desk!
