The Emperor of Nihon-Ja
John Flanagan
Flanagan, John. The Emperor of Nihon-Ja. Penguin Group. New York, New York. 2010
Selling over three million copies, The Emperor of Nihon-Ja has quickly set a new bar to which all action books will be judged through for years to come. This thrilling book, filled with action and suspense, is great for teenagers who love the genre.
The great emperor, Khann, is now ready to regain his throne in the Kingdom of Nhon-Ja, after it had been ravaged by a massive earthquake. But before doing so, he must fight off the wrath of the new group of relentless fighters who only seek to have the emperor's head.
With this new force slowly closing in on the him, the emperor turns to his most capable ranger, Senghi Kulo. Senghi Kulo is a ranger that, with the help of his trusted apprentice, Hansho Blanco, may very well be an unbeatable assassin duo. These two have been working together for many years and have created a bond that is almost impossible to break.
Emperor Khann gives the duo a task that requires them to take the life of Nelona, a heartless killer who’s believed to be leading this new group that is after the emperor. Nelona and Khann have encountered each other in battles before she formed the group seeking to kill the emperor. During their last encounter, Khann had taken the life of Nelona’s father who once ruled the great Kingdom of Zenos-Jan. This only further helped Nelona’s thirst for Khann’s head.
Emperor Khann turns away from the duo after giving them the task and looks to leave their meeting. However, it seems that Hansho has other ideas as he quickly draws his sword and aims the point directly at the back of the emperor’s head...
The Emperor of Nihon-Ja is a book to be remembered. Though it may not have the most original plot, it gets the job done and provides the structure for some fantastic moments. Not many books get 5 out of 5 stars, but The Emperor of Nihon-Ja truly deserves it.
