Fever Crumb
Philip Reeve
Reeve, Philip. Fever Crumb Scholastic Press. New York, NY. 2009.
Fever Crumb, by Philip Reeve, is a take on the classic book; Red Riding Hood. Fever Crumb displays some of the events in the original Red Riding Hood book, but it is darker and eerier, leaving chills every chapter.
Fever Crumb, takes place in a small town in Colorado. In a tiny cottage up in the mountains lives a girl named Marissa. She hides some very dark secrets that she has never spoken to anyone, not even her loyal rat Fluffy. Marissa lives with her elderly mother, who is currently suffering from the small pox. Marissa desperately tries to keep her well, but on one sunny afternoon, a dark tragedy occurred. Marissa’s mother has disappeared.
Marissa panics, she doesn’t know what to do! She tries to think where her ill mother could have gone, as she was much too sick to have walked out of the house, or travelled anywhere for that matter. Then it dawns on Marissa. She must have been kidnapped by the man who killed her father, her brother, and her cat. A dark cloud hovers above Marissa as she makes the connections and realizes what she has to do. She must leave her house and go searching for her mother.
Marissa searches for days with no luck. She finally decides to give up and take care of herself for the rest of her life. As she lays on her mothers bed, she feels a poke in her shoulder. She lifts the covers and finds a map scribbled on the back of a napkin. The directions look familiar, and Marissa knows where she has to go to find her mother. She finally realizes she will have to make many painful sacrifices, but she will do it for her mother.
Fever Crumb is a gory yet a very exciting book. Anyone who enjoys reading dark mysteries will definitely love Fever Crumb. Some of the language in the book is graphic in places, but it suits the story. It is by far the best young-adult mystery that has been written in years.
