Beverly Cleary
Cleary, Beverly. The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Morrow Junior Books. New York. 1965.
The Mouse and the Motorcycle is about mischief and creativity by a well appreciated famous children's writer Beverly Cleary. The age range of readers is eight through ten years of age. The Mouse and the Motorcycle got the award for most creative story in 2005.
The Mouse and the Motorcycle is about a mouse who lives in the ceiling of a restaurant. He spends most of his time riding his best friend, a motorcycle. He spends the other time scaring customers and chefs.
One day, this curious little mouse decides to move into the nearby restaurant because he was running low on food. He ran up the gutter and ate his way through the roof. He found a pile of dust, and made a little bed for him to sleep in. The next morning the mouse was anxious to get his hands on some food!
He woke up, got his hair combed, and made his way for the food pantry. On his way to the food, he found a little motorcycle that fit him perfectly. He hopped on and started the engine. The mouse was delighted to hear the engine work. He rode his motorcycle through the kitchen and found that a chef had just dropped a big chunk of cheese. He drove through the kitchen at full speed. One of the ladies scream at the top of her lungs and tried to hit the mouse. The mouse now had to go full speed so that he would not die.
Beverly Cleary did a fantastic job, leaving the reader feeling all the mouse’s thoughts. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is great for young readers who have just started reading chapter books, because of the fact that there aren't too many big words.
