Nicholson, William. Seeker. Harcourt, Inc. Orlando, Florida. 2006.
Seeker, is about a boy who has gone through wishing he would die, to helping two of his new friends find the lost island of Arbanda. William Nicholson did a great job making this book interesting and getting to the point. This book is great for teenagers because of the level of adventure and excitement that occurs through the whole story.
Seeker, follows a young boy named Michael who is in a very bad condition for a boy his age. The book starts off with a very strong start, “Ever wake up cold, hungry, thirsty, wishing the next breath would be your last? This is how I felt two months ago. I was alone, paralyzed, and wished that I would just die. So I wouldn’t have to suffer. I am alone, hungry, my mouth as dry as the desert sand, if only I could scream, “Someone please help me, ANYBODY!”
Michael was whipped two days ago by a man because he had stolen an apple from this mans store and the man was furious and broke Michael’s leg. His skin, so tight around his body that you can see his bones. When Michael thought that he was about to have his last breath a young girl and boy came next to him. They gave him water and an apple. The water is so cooling against his lips that his whole body shakes. The apple is the best that he has ever had juicy but so filling. Then slowly Michael sits up and asks the young boy and girl who they were and why they helped him.
The young girl spoke first “My name is Josaile and this is my brother Orlando. We are looking for the lost island of Arbanda and we need your help to find it. Your name is and Michael and you are the prince of Arbanda”. “Me a prince?” Michael says “I have no family how can I be a prince?” Josaile and her brother Orlando explain to Michael that his mother died after giving birth to him from a terrible illness which she ended up giving to her entire family. The illness killed all of Michael’s family and Michael miraculously survived.
Michael and his two new friends follow a map that is supposed to take them to Arbanda. At times Michael doesn’t want to go to see what he could have had. When they get to Arbanda four years later, everything was worth it, Arbanda had a huge castle like building and millions of diamonds inside.
The end of Seeker is very good. It is very well written and draws you into wanting to never stop reading and you wonder what happens next. I would recommend this book for teenagers.
