Stealing Death
Janet Lee Carey
Carey, Janet Lee. Stealing Death. Egmont USA. Manhattan, New York. 2009.
Janet Lee Carey has published another colossal hit,Stealing Death. This prodigious read is filled with courage, horror, and adventure. Stealing Death has brought it’s readers to tears because of the desolate situation between the brave boy and his attempt to rescue his captured mother.
Ever since Bryan was old enough to understand what Kimi, his mother, was saying, Bryan knew that Kimi was keeping secrets from him. Bryan would have never thought that the secret his mother was keeping from him was so unbelievable. Only after his mother was captured on his sixteenth birthday, did Bryan suspect something was afoot.
Bryan discovers his mother’s massive secret -- she signed a contract with Death. She agreed that if Death saved her son from dying of asphixiation, Death would capture and convey her to his lair the day Bryan turned sixteen. Bryan goes on a wild adventure to find his mother across spooky swamps, blackened skies, and places he couldn’t have ever imagined. Kimi tries to contact him through his dreams to supply Bryan clues as to where she is. He makes this journey on a spiritual horse named Nightmare, that he finds through his mother.
Byran receives dreams from not only his mother, but Death himself. Death is controlling Byran’s emotions through his dreams, and is making him feel vulnerable and scared. Bryan has to conjure up courage to face and battle Death’s terrifying supernatural spirits, direful demons, and creatures almost as horrifying as Death himself, if he ever wants to see his mother again.
As despondent as this book is, it is an outstanding book that dives deep into the heart of it’s readers and makes the reader feel sympathy for Bryan and his Mother. This is a highly recommend book to anyone from ages thirteen-sixty.
