The Circle of Gold continues the Book of Time series when Clith comes out of hiding and notices that the book has worked its magic again and Clith find himself 20 years later. While he was gone the Dricincks leader, Finge (Finge is a demon leader who recently had a scheme to release the raging monsters of the underworld, that when freed would wipe out the human race) fulfilled his plan to release the monsters of the underworld.
As soon as Clith realized that the human race had been wiped out, he goes on a journey that leads him to Leonardo da Vinci living in hiding. Leonardo tells him that he found, back in his day, a ancient Mayan structure called the circle of gold, that he used to travel to to this time of non-humanity.
Clith learns from Leonardo where to find the circle of gold and he leaves to go to the previous Mexico. By Mexico he finds the small island Isle Clarion on which he uses the map that Leonardo gave him. Soon he finds a Mayan temple with markings, which tell of the circle of gold. Clith knows he is at the right place.
