Prey
Michael Crichton
Crichton, Michael. Prey. St. Martin’s Press. New York, New York. 2008.
Prey was written by Michael Crichton, who has been writing books for years. He always makes the reader want to keep reading. Prey makes the reader feel confused at times, and towards the end, nothing seems to connect.
The book starts off with a boy swimming. He’s swimming away from something, but it doesn’t explain what it is. The boy turns around to see black smoke flying towards him. The book then skips to a man inside a bar. He was with a woman named Kathrine. No one says the man’s name, as if they don’t know it. The man leaves the bar, alone. Three more men appear around him in a menacing circle. He’s surrounded. One man steps in the circle and says “Is this how you hide yourself, Johnathan? I thought you were better than this." Johnathan replies by saying “Don’t underestimate me, Robert.” Then, Johnathan vanishes.
Johnathan appears inside a house. He sits on a couch and flips the armrest to find a button. When he pressed it, he and the chair fell. Johnathan landed inside a cave. A man appeared on a screen. He said “Welcome back agent, I suspect your mission was a failure since your position was given away by one of Robert’s spies. We suspect it was someone who was around you a lot - can you think of anyone suspicious who was always with you?” Then it hit him. “Sir, I know who it is, she’s been with me everywhere I go and was always asking questions,” said Johnathan.
Johnathan goes to the last place he saw her, which was the bar. He walked into the bar only to get hit in the head by something hard. Johnathan fell to the ground. He awoke tied to a plain chair. In front of him was the woman, Kathrine. Kathrine asked Johnathan questions about his agency, but he didn’t break. She pulled out a weapon, but just before she hit him, a man came through the door and tackled her. He tied Kathrine up and freed Johnathan. The man was Johnathan’s brother. They both ran through the door to see a ton of men with weapons. Johnathan’s brother threw him a gun and the battle started.
People have always read this book for the challenge of finding out what’s going on. Prey makes the reader think harder than any other book. Although it’s not the best book ever written, the writing style makes everyone want to keep reading to find out how it ends.
1 out of 5 stars.
