The Last Treasure
Janet Anderson
Anderson, Janet. The Last Treasure. Scholastic Inc. New York, New York. 2003.
The Last Treasure is a thrilling adventure story! It has some great passages that show how the characters grow in the book. The book has been rated very highly by the New York Times.
The Last Treasure is about Billy Bob a ten year old child and his pet lizard Sparky, who have an obsession with hunting treasure. One day, Billy decided to go on a treasure hunt to find the Lost City of Gold. With Sparky by his side, he packed food, water, and other supplies and left his house. He was prepared to go on an adventure.
They decided to start out at the library to research the location of the Lost City of Gold. The library could not help them with the whereabouts. So Billy and Sparky went to Billy’s grandpa for help. Billy’s grandpa said he knew where it was but he knew nothing of how to get to the Lost City. He had read in the New York Times about how the center of the Earth is made out gold instead of iron and nickel. He explained that inside this sphere of gold was the Lost City of Gold, and how early cultures built tunnels that lead to the center of the Earth, but that they were all destroyed in an earthquake. Billy and Sparky came up with an idea.
they had some scrap metal and other tools in his garage that he used to create a powerful drill to dig down to the Lost City. When Billy got there, they found large door with three different key holes sealing the entrance to the Lost City. On the ground in huge red letters “If you want to find all three keys you have to find the mansion on Fourth and Main. There in the dinning room you will see three pillars with the three keys resting on top of them. Come back and put the right treasures in the right spots to get all the gold you could imagine.” So they turned his drill into reverse, and went to the surface to find the keys. they found the mansion but when he looked inside he could only find two out of the three keys!
“Someone must have stolen it,” Billy thought, “but who else knew about the Lost City of Gold?”
The Last Treasure is a magnificent book that all children would enjoy. Anderson did a great job explaining the life of this curious child. All the sentences were beautifully written and make it seem like you were really in all the situations with Billy and Sparky.
