Goddess of Yesterday
Caroline Cooney
Cooney, Caroline. Goddess Of Yesterday. Delacorte Press. New York, NY. 2002.
Goddess Of Yesterday is a tragic story of mystery and death. With many questions and few answers, it really keeps the reader guessing. This book is a strong comeback for Caroline Cooney, who’s last book did not go over well with readers. Her reputation as a phenomenal writer was beginning to fade, but now many fans believe she is back on track.
Julia Lousk has had a hard life in the past, but now she is next to be goddess of the land. She is clouded with worry of the power that she will soon hold, but most of all she is scared of the legends. Legends say that any woman who rules Leaziths will perish. There has not been a female ruler of Leaziths since Zesmay’s disappearance. It seemed like whenever a female god would step up to the throne they would disappear and never be seen again. Julia’s dying father was only getting sicker, which meant she was getting closer and closer to being queen.
December 4th was a cold sorrowful morning. As the bells rang everyone knew that the king had died. Julia was filled with sorrow and fear. She didn’t know what to do, so she started running, and didn’t stop. She ran to the only place she new as well as Leaziths, the sea. She remembered all the happy memories she had there, of her mother and her wandering along the beach. But today was not a happy day, it was a day that brought sorrow to all of Leaziths, a day that Julia knew was coming. As Julia stared down into the water she saw a dark shape emerging. All of a sudden something grabbed her, and everything went black.
Julia woke up under the sea with the missing goddess Zesmay staring down at her. Zesmay told Julia that she should not be afraid to be the queen for she was going to break the curse and change Leaziths forever. Julia tried to ask more but Zesmay was gone and Julia was back sitting on the dock. Although Zesmay said little Julia trusted her, she knew she had to go back to Leaziths to fulfill her destiny.
Goddess Of Yesterday is a mesmerizing book of courage and destiny that brings you deep into the pages. letting you feel what the character feels. With a fantastic plot and creative characters this is an outstanding book by Caroline Coony.
