Stewart, Mary. The Prince and the Pilgrim. Hodder and Stoughton. London, England. 1995
The Prince and the Pilgrim is a heart breaking story of forbidden love, daring decisions and incredible feats. Mary Stewart wrote this breath taking novel about a girl named Marigold written in 1984. This book is now sweeping the nation, absorbing the public, and taking the breath away from many.
The Prince and the Pilgrim tells the story of a young princess that lives a lonely life in the castle of Kontesh in the mountains of Eastern Europe. Every morning she would listen to her daily lessons on etiquette, which was her least favorite part of the day. After lunch, she would escape to the stables to ride her beloved horse, Jasmine. She would ride Jasmine through the hills exploring places no human had been before. Her life continued this way, waiting in agony for the day her prince would come.
Finally, her prince did come... much to her disappointment. His name was Adam. He was a handsome fellow, but he thought he was the best in all the land and this didn’t leave much room for poor Marigold. One day, when she was riding her horse through the woods and lost her way. Lost and confused she wandered around aimlessly. Finally, tired and thirsty, she stopped to take a drink by a cool mountain stream. While she was drinking a snake slithered out from under a rock and spooked Jasmine, who ran away into the woods.
A few minuets later, out came Jasmine with a rider on her back. The mysterious rider returned Jasmine to her. As they got to know each other better, she found out he was a pilgrim named Jacob, who came across the seas from a far away land. As time moved on, they fell in love. However, there was one thing standing in the way of their love: the arranged marriage between Marigold and the prince Adam. They grew more and more worried as the marriage came closer and the time where Adam would take Marigold away. Will Jacob save her from the prince or will Adam ruin their love forever?
The Prince and the Pilgrim tears at the readers heart and keeps them wanting to read more. Though it brings tears to the eyes of many, it also touches the hearts of just as many. This book will be the favorite of many for the years to come.
