Beddor, Frank. The Looking Glass Wars New York Dial Books. 2006.
The Looking Glass Wars is the first book in The Looking Glass trilogy, and was written by Frank Beddor. The Looking Glass Wars is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, and is most suitable for teenagers.
The Looking Glass Wars starts when Alyssa, the main character, finds an old chest in her attic while looking for supplies for her school project. She dedicates all her spare time to finding the key that opens the chest, she looked in the basement, the backyard, and the whole house, but there is one room she was forbidden to enter: her Dad’s study.
One day, Alyssa pretends that she is sick and stays in her bedroom. Alyssa's dad has to go to a meeting and trusts that Alyssa will stay in her bed and read a book, but little did he know that Alyssa planned the whole thing! After Alyssa’s dad leaves, Alyssa jumps out of bed and checks her dad’s study and finds it locked. Alyssa gets the keys from her hiding place and unlocks the study door. Meanwhile, in the garage, Alyssa’s dad realizes he is missing his keys! Alyssa quickly goes back to her room; she had what she needed: the key to the chest. When Alyssa’s dad opens the door to his house, he hears a door close.
The next day Alyssa goes into the attic to get the chest. When she opens it, she finds a mirror. The mirror is a 17th century relic. It also had a playing card on the back of it: the queen of hearts. But that is not all, there is also a journal. The next part of The Looking Glass Wars is when it gets interesting. Alyssa’s dad investigates what Alyssa is up to, while Alyssa starts reading the journal which reveals the secrets of the mirror’s horrifying past and Alyssa’s long lost mother.
Frank Beddor’s book is like no other and has the feeling of an exciting movie, even though the beginning was slow, this story has a great plot even with only two characters.
