The Difference Between You and Me is a fictional book about two girls who have been best friends ever since kindergarten, but some things happen that will change their lives forever. Madeleine George hasn’t received any awards for her novel yet.
In the summer between 8th grade and freshman year, best friends Ava and Jenna had already planned how their whole summer was going to go. Everything was going just fine, until Ava decided that she would go to a summer art program in a high school about twenty miles away from home. Jenna, of course, supported her with her decisions, but there was still a part of her that felt like she and Ava will start drifting apart.
At the art program orientation, Ava saw a girl outside on the ground tracing a shadow of a tree. The girl looked interesting. She was dressed in a black tutu, had pigtails, and was wearing a sweatshirt even though it was 89° out. For Ava, the girl seemed like a girl from a movies.
For lunch, Ava went to a steak house. She ran into the girl that was drawing the shadows. Her name was Fay, and she attended the same art program that Ava was attending. The two girls got to know each other a little better, going over to each other’s house over the weekend and having a sleepover. For Ava, not only had she made a new friend, but she was starting to change too. She dressed and talked differently and she even started to wear army boots. As for Jenna, she felt left out and lonelier each day. She knew this was the summer that she would lose her best friend, but she never had the guts to tell her.
The Difference Between You and Me is a relatable book to many young adult readers. It is filled with a lot of teenage drama and keeps readers wanting for more. Madeleine George did a great job writing this novel.
