Captain Hawaii is a non-fiction book about a seventeen year old boy who has many great times in the jungle. It was written by the famous author Anthony Dana Arkin, in 2004. It was awarded the best children's book of 2005 award.
Joesph is a seventeen year old American boy who's father had passed away when he was only eight in an accident. Joseph goes with his new father and friend into the Hawaiian jungle and camps there for four nights. He tries to do the things with his new father, but it does not go as planned. His mother does not like the forest and would prefer to stay at the nice warm sunny beaches near by.
They all go on a hike through the jungle, but Joesph wants to go on a different path to see the gigantic river. Joseph walks straight into a sand pit. After this he runs into a giant spider nest and then jumps into the river screaming. The family runs after and finds him sitting with aching pain. They head back to camp for the night and have a campfire.
The next day, Joseph’s step-father and friend were looking for Joseph, but could not find him. They looked and looked then finally found him in a bush that was next to an old oak tree near the river. They woke him up and got on a boat to find “Captain Dans Zodiac,” a cave on the side of a large hill. They all got out and took the long walk in the “Captain Dans Zodiac” cave and found the amazing crystals.
Anthony's Captain Hawaii has a great story of a boy going through tough and exiting vacations in Hawaii. After you read this you will want to know how his other adventures will take place. This book is for readers 8-12 years of age.
