Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were Watching God. HarperCollins Books. New York City, New York. 2000.
Their Eyes Were Watching God is a very old story written back in the 1700’s about a mythical spirit who haunts an innocent town for their money and gold. Zora Neale Hurston tried to make this book for readers who love horror and sadness. The book switches back and forth between being sad, or happy. This is good sometimes, but it makes some parts boring.
Their Eyes Were Watching God is about a mythical spirit who has extreme anger issues and lets out all his anger out on this innocent little town named Efrengevale, who has nothing to give but their little stash of money and gold. The townsfolk rush around, in the mines, in their closets, anywhere where they can find something to give to the mythical spirit to keep him from destroying their town.
The spirit returns to their town every week or so. Alfrador, the town leader, almost has no time to prepare the town. They are all very poor, so it is hard for them to get supplies fast. When the spirit returns to Efrengevale, he demands payment or Efrengevale will be destroyed.
The people in the town became tired of this spirit, and they plan to attack him. The spirit performs a surprise attack on the town, because he has heard about this attack on him.
Efrengevale take their stance. Even the little children are holding spears and swords.
Zora Neale Hurston made Their Eyes Were Watching God so the reader would not understand if it is sad, or happy. The book switches back and forth. At some points it gets somewhat boring, but it leads up to exiting moments.
3 out of 5 stars.
