The Lost Conspiracy
Frances Hardinge
Hardinge, Frances. The Lost Conspiracy. HarperCollins Publishers. New York, NY. 2009.
The Lost Conspiracy, by the author Frances Hardinge, is a fiction book about being stranded on a deserted island. This is a book that teens would like, because of the reality of being lost and almost completely alone.
The Lost Conspiracy is about a young girl named Monica who was on her way to visit her father in Rome, but on the way there she gets lost at sea.
Monica just visited her grandmother, in Spain, and was on her way home to see her father in Rome, Italy. Monica had to take a ship back to Rome because her grandmother couldn't afford to get her a private carriage ride home. Monica boarded the ship, at four in the afternoon, not knowing what to expect. At six-thirty a terrible storm had begun and it started to rain and thunder powerfully. Monica sat in the corner of the ship trying to stay warm under her cloak. She fell asleep hoping that the storm would end and that she would get home safe and sound.
Monica awoke confused and not knowing where she was. She was soaking wet and freezing to death. The sun was hidden beyond many trees and the ground was ice cold. She stood up and looked around trying to find civilization. No one was to be found. Suddenly she heard a scream “Hello is anyone here?” She ran to the voice and sees a boy who looks about her age. She talks to him asking how long has he been there and if there’s any way she can get home. The boy answers slowly and sadly that he has been stuck on the island for five days and there was no way he could escape.
The end of The Lost Conspiracy is really not that interesting, and the back of the book explained the whole story. The Lost Conspiracy wouldn’t be recommended for younger kids.
