Jane Eyre
Charlotte Bronte
Bronte, Charlotte. Jane Eyre. Courage Books. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 1991.
Jane Eyre is a classical story of love and murder by the master author Charlotte Bronte. The novel has been a staple of western literature since its penning in 1833. This haunting glimpse into the world of jealously and betrayal has captured the minds of readers for generations.
The story of Jane Eyre is about Jane, an older Italian women, who has a steamy affair with a man named Nathan. As Nathan shows reluctance to marry her, Jane begins to fear her old age will mean she will die an old maid.
Jane then marries an old businessman, thereby insuring her future. She continues to see Nathan though. Jane enjoys having the affair, but Nathan becomes jealous now that Jane is married to another man despite her insistences that she loves only him.
When the old businessman dies suddenly from an illness, Nathan is overjoyed because he is now free to marry Jane. Jane, however, is struck by her husband's death and blames the illness on her infidelity.
Nathan visits Jane as she is praying by the grave of her husband. Nathan proposes that they use Jane's new wealth to move to London, but Jane insists that she will no longer betray her now dead husband. Nathan flies into a fit of rage and Jane asks him to leave.
Overcome with jealously, Nathan draws a pistol from his coat as Jane drops a flower on the grave behind her empty house...
Charlotte Bronte's moral dilemma, Jane Eyre, touches on fundamental human emotions. It leaves the reader with a harrowing sense of despondency and melancholy. Though some of the dialogue is awkward, Jane Eyre succeed in both depth and believability.
4 out of 5 stars.
