Come Sing, Jimmy Jo
Katherine Paterson
Paterson, Katherine. Come Sing, Jimmy Jo. Lodestar books. New York. 1985.
Come Sing, Jimmy Jo was on the list of the worst books ever to be written. The patchy, unprofessional writing really does not work in this book’s favor, or in any books’ favor, for that matter. Most people read Come Sing, Jimmy Jo to see if it’s really as bad as everyone says it is.
Jimmy Jo is a ten year old boy with a really unrealistic dream. JJ, as his family and close friends call him, wants to be a country pop singer. His father, Bobby Bo, rarely pays any attention to poor JJ and spends most of his time watching television in their 70’s style RV. His mother, Joan, is a loving Avon sales agent who adores her son; though, he tends to favor his father more than her.
Another day of Jimmy Jo’s terrible, boring life goes by. His mom coos over him, squeezes his cheeks, and puts his hair back in place with her freshly licked fingers. His father just plain ignores him. He asks himself, “Jimmy Jo, why can’t you just grow up, already? Follow your dreams! Follow your heart.” All JJ wanted was a life to himself, a nice house and a real family. Most of all, Jimmy Jo wanted to sing. All he wanted to do was sing!
Years go by and JJ still hasn’t fulfilled his dream of becoming a country pop singer. Though he went to band tryouts, he was immediately rejected for his poor voice and undeveloped guitar skills. He grew up and broke free from the family life he had and hated. Come Sing, Jimmy Jo ends with Jimmy Jo a happy business man, living at home with a wife a two children.
Come Sing, Jimmy Jo is an absolutely pointless book; It had no climax and was boring all the way through. The entire outline of the book was changed in the middle; even his father’s name randomly changed from Bobby Bo to Ron! Overall, Come Sing, Jimmy Jo really lives up to it’s reputation of one of the worst book ever written.
