A Voice of Her Own
Barbara Dana
Dana, Barbara. A Voice of Her Own. HarperCollins Publishers. New York. 2009.
A Voice of Her Own, by the author Barbara Dana, is a fiction book
about making your own decisions. This book has been popular for two
years so far and a lot of people recommend it. Elisabeth’s life is
very sincere and tells the reader that you shouldn’t let someone
control your life after you have turned old enough to do what you
think is right for yourself.
A Voice of Her Own, is about a girl named Elisabeth, whose parents
treated her like a slave. They didn’t care about her and thought that
it wasn’t important for her to do anything except what they wanted her
to do. Elisabeth then decides that it is time for her to take control
of her life.
Elisabeth just turned eighteen and asked her parents if she could move
out of their house. Her parents were very shocked and refused to give
her that kind of freedom. They told her that they didn’t think she was
responsible enough to start her own life, but the truth was her
parents didn’t want to have to get someone else to do all of the work
around the house.
Elisabeth finally confesses to herself that she has been mistreated,
and decides she is going to run away. After she has secretly packed up
all of her things, she and her dog run away. She took a trolley and
went to her old best friend Bethany’s house.
Elisabeth had found a job where she was making enough money to rent an
apartment and go to college. She made some new friends and even though
she sometimes missed her old family, she was very happy that she ran
away.
A Voice of Her Own didn’t turn out as well written as the one would
expect of Barbara Dana. The back of the book tells the reader almost
the complete story. Although it was a good plot, the book itself
wasn’t that good.
2 out 5 stars.
