Fargo Rock City
Chuck Klosterman
Klosterman, Chuck, Fargo Rock City. Scribner. New York. NY. 2001
Fargo Rock City is a heavy metal odyssey in rural North Dakota. Chuck Klosterman does an amazing job depicting this inspiring story. Fargo Rock City was the winner of the Ascap-Deems Taylor award. This same author wrote the famous book Killing Yourself to Live. The famous author Stephen King once said “If you love Rock n’ Roll, you will love Fargo Rock City.”
Fargo Rock City is about a teenage farm boy in rural North Dakota. His name is Joe. Joe grew up listening to heavy metal and rock n’ roll and has always loved it. One day, Joe dyed his cow’s hide so that it looked like it had KISS makeup on.
One summer afternoon, Joe met a kid named Ernie who played the guitar. They decided to make a band called The Penguins, because of the black and white makeup they were hoping to wear. The band started out very well. They had a gig at a bar in just one week. His parents decided Joe must do five hours of work in the field that week. On Thursday, Joe was hard at work when Ernie came over. He said, “You need a drum set Joe.” “I’ve got the greatest idea, I will make one.” said Joe.
On Friday night, Joe was sitting on the stage making his family proud. Playing one song after the next, he was having the time of his life. People loved them so much that they started singing along. There in the corner, stood a man in a dark suit. “I wonder what he’s doing here?” thought Joe.
Fargo Rock City is an awesome book that inspires musicians all over the world. This heart warming story reminds us of our childhood. If you like music, this is the book for you.
