Keep Up the Good Work!

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has awarded five-year accreditation to the Peosta campus Child Development Center! Accreditation demonstrates the center's commitment to quality and continuous quality improvement. NAEYC-accredited programs commit to ensuring that their environment, policies and practices are continually aligned with NAEYC’s early learning standards and recommended practices.

Founded in 1926, the National Association for the Education of Young Children is a large nonprofit association in the United States representing early childhood education teachers, paraeducators, center directors, trainers, college educators, families of young children, policy makers and advocates.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

In partnership with the Green Iowa AmeriCorps team at Winneshiek Energy District (WED), WED members Kevin and Leslie Sand have created the Tiny Trees Initiative and are offering free tree seedlings to area residents. Did you know that one tree can provide enough oxygen for four people, in addition to storing carbon dioxide? Trees also provide wonderful shade in those hot, humid months (I know we're all longing for those temps right now!) and cut down on your summer energy bills.

If you live in Decorah, residents can sign up here to have a tree planted on your property. If you don't live in Decorah, you can still receive a free seedling by emailing giasignup@energydistrict.org or max@energydistrict.org. They also will be handing them out at the Winneshiek County Solar Fair this Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. - noon in the Danan Lansing Buildling at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds. There will be workshops on solar, solar financing and solar + electrification plus solar and geothermal contractors. There will also be fun activities for the kids and refreshments from 301 Eatery, so you can get your questions answered and keep the family entertained and hydrated in preparation for planting your free tree!

BIG FISH | be amazed.

What lie were you told as a kid?

(when pouting) If you keep your lip stuck out a bird will come by and poop on it.

What is the best parenting tip?

Be flexible and give them independence (but not too much!). As a parent of two teenagers our schedules are constantly changing and I never know what they have planned.

Do you have a recurring dream/nightmare and, if so, what happens in the dream?

I am in an elevator alone and when the elevator moves I float in the air. It's just a dream but because of it I do not like riding in elevators.

What fashion trend do you regret?

Big hair! In high school I had Elaine (from Seinfeld) hair.

Tell us you’re an American without telling us you’re an American.

Our grill out parties consist of beer, hamburgers, hotdogs and a dish to share

What fictional place would you like to visit?

Hogwarts, Universal Studios is awesome, but I would love to wander the halls of the school and experience the magic.

What is the most unusual job you have had in your life?

As a teen, walking bean fields for my neighbor, pulling weeds and picking up rocks.
