Want to Start Gardening? Here are Suggestions for Gardening in March

Gardeners! If you’re pining away for warmer months ahead and want some tips on things you can be doing in March to cultivate results, check out Tedsgardens.com (this is not a product endorsement). The website offers many suggestions for sowing seeds outdoors and indoors right now. The site is also customized for Iowa (Zone 5) and includes tips on grow lights, heating mats, what seeds to consider and, for first-time vegetable gardeners, how to design this year’s outdoor garden at your home.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

Snow is melting, birds are singing and springtime is (hopefully) almost here! As you start to take on spring cleaning projects around the house, see if you can swap commercial cleaning products for homemade, non-toxic alternatives. These alternatives are easy to make, usually more cost-effective than what you can buy at the store and can be made using low-waste products that you already have at home, like vinegar and baking soda. Check out the recipes below or this website for more DIY cleaning inspiration! Special thanks to Science faculty member Molly Schiel for sharing her recipe for a refreshing homemade room spray! If you are interested in greener cleaning products, but don't have the time to make your own, check out this guide from the Environmental Protection Agency on how to choose products at the store for your family's health and the health of the planet. Happy spring cleaning!

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Monica Franzen

Communications Instructor | Calmar

If extraterrestrials (aliens) landed on Earth, and you were the first one to communicate with them, what would you say or ask?

I would ask the extraterrestrials if they are real or in Halloween costumes. If real, then I would ask what took them so long?

How do you feel about people and/or yourself cursing?

I do not think cursing in public is appropriate. However, in private it can be very healing. Somehow the hammer hitting the finger does not heal as quickly with, "Oh, silly me."

Would you rather meet your ancestors or your descendants? Please explain.

I would rather meet my descendants. I would enjoy seeing a great-great-great Monica.

Your rap name is “LIL” then the last thing you spent money on. “LIL _______________.”

My rap name is Lil Eye Glass Wipes . . . aka Quick See.

Would you own or use a self-driving car?

I would not own or use a self-driving car because I would be afraid the car would not stop and let me go to the bathroom when needed.
