NICC Foundation Releases Donor Impact Report

The NICC Advancement office published and distributed the Winter edition of the Donor Impact Report to thank donors for their investments in the College and to show how their gifts are making a difference in the lives of our students.

The issue included a story about a donor who covered all tuition, fees and living expenses for a student, Ashley Northouse, who was struggling financially. His support helped Ashley complete her degree and begin a successful career in healthcare. Another story highlighted the impact donors have when they participate on Great Give Day. Cazrielle Elder (at left) received one of five Silver Ticket scholarships to support her education at the College, made possible from donations in the event.

Ideas to Improve the Month of February!

Winter cold, dark and gray days, the NFL season has officially ended and the first day of spring is still four weeks away. These factors alone may describe our experience of the calendar’s shortest, and often most challenging, month. Rachel Wilkerson Miller, BuzzFeed staff writer, offers a few great suggestions in her online essay, 7 Simple and Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Life in February.

Track the amount of time you spend on smartphone apps, try a clever cooking shortcut for your favorite meals, change up your coffee habit with a cup of tea and more!

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

The last week in February is National CSA Week! CSA? What's that? "CSA" stands for "community supported agriculture" and is a way to support a local farmer, put a down payment on nutritious veggies and fruits for the season, and start thinking about the warmth of spring and summer again! You can purchase a CSA share before the season begins, and reserve a share of a farmer's harvest for the season. These days, CSA shares come in all shapes and sizes; a traditional CSA share comes as a weekly or bi-weekly curated box of veggies and some farms even offer a "market-share" option, which gives folks the possibility of a farmers market credit instead. Many farms offer recipes, tips and special produce to their CSA members, and a CSA allows you to support your local economy, while also lessening your carbon footprint by sourcing your produce locally. Celebrate National CSA Week by learning more about CSA options in your area! NICC staff can get a discount on local CSAs, too! Check out details for the Dubuque/Peosta CSA Program and the Calmar CSA Program. Registrations are due by the end of the day Friday, March 25.

What is the best parenting tip?

“Sometimes you need to make the conscious decision to look away and pretend you saw nothing.” My grandfather gave me this advice three years after my first child was born, and it has been a help.

What is the most irrational fear or phobia that you have?

The dark! I always have a light on somewhere, and I even travel with night lights in my bag.

Tell us you’re an American without telling us you’re an American.

I drive a giant SUV, with Disney stickers on it, and then drive it through a Dunkin Donuts line.

Your rap name is “LIL” then the last thing you spent money on.

“LIL Gong Bath.”

What fictional place would you like to visit?

I love my Lord of the Rings, so I would pick The Shire.
