Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Self-Care Tip:

Take care of your brain! One in 5 people have experienced a brain health issue in their lives (that’s over 600,000 Iowans)

Check out Brain Health Now! They are a grassroots organization dedicated to ending the stigma around mental illness and brain health disorders. The issue of mental health and mental illness remains shrouded in misunderstanding and stigma. Brain Health Now has a goal of decreasing the stigma by educating the public that brain health issues and disorders, rather being character flaws or personal weaknesses, have biological and neurological basis. The stigma associated with mental illness prevents people from seeking the help they need and fewer than half of those who have a brain health diagnosis ever seek help. The social stigma and discrimination they experience from society, family, friends, and employers creates more difficulties, in turn making it harder for them to recover. See full article.

Inspiration of the Week:

Two kinds of decisions worth focusing on ...

HARD ONES because you know that whatever you choose is possibly the wrong path. Hard decisions are hard because you have competing priorities. Hard decisions that happen often are probably a sign that the system you’re relying on isn’t stable, which means that the thing you did last time might not be the thing you want to do this time.

EASY ONES because it probably means that you’ve got a habit going. And an unexamined habit can easily become a rut, a trap that leads to digging yourself deeper over time.

-Seth Godin

Recipe of the Week:

Beets! It seems like people either hate them or can’t get enough of them. Beets are packed with nutrients! They help lower blood pressure and the real reason we consume them in our household is eating beets may enhance athletic performance by improving oxygen use and time to exhaustion. Pickled beets are a favorite! Our most recent kitchen hack is steaming our beets in the Instant Pot, which eliminates the need to wash the stove top and is less messy! We store our pickled beets in the fridge (we don’t can). Here’s a recipe for homemade pickled beets.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Tami Keune

Nursing Instructor | Calmar

When you were growing up, what game or activity did you absolutely dread playing, and why?

Hide and seek. I was way too competitive and also hated to be scared, so the combination of the two always caused more stress than it should have.

When you retire, and assuming you have enough money to do so, what is one cause you would give to because you are passionate about its mission and purpose?

The Hope Lodge in Iowa City. They are an amazing organization that gave my family so much support when my Dad was fighting cancer. When you’re fighting a battle it is so nice to have a place to rest your head at night, knowing you are safe and close to the hospital.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

Shawshank Redemption. I am not a movie-goer, although when this movie comes on TV I always watch it.

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

I wouldn’t change a thing. Being a nurse is a calling and I am honored to do so.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

Ireland; I would love to tour the country and spend a week in a castle.

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

A wellness center with an indoor pool in Lansing. It would be free of charge and give the kids something to do year-round.
