College Friends and Colleagues Participate in the Grand Parade at Nordic Fest on Saturday, July 28!

Colleagues walked in the the annual main event Grand Parade in a display of NICC pride in late July. For readers whose homes are in the Dubuque area and may not travel to Decorah often, the annual Nordic Fest is one of the city's most anticipated celebrations honoring the entire region's Scandinavian heritage. Since 1967, more than 1.5 million visitors from across the world have attended the festival. Decorah is home to many community members whose ancestry and family lineage is connected to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. Thank you to all of our colleagues who volunteered and participated in the festival this year! See more photos.

What is something you have done that would surprise others who never knew?

I've been on TV twice: Once during a high school state football game, and the other while I was spending time in New York City! In New York, I was “volunteered” to practice being a weather host. I gained a new appreciation for weather folks, especially because everything they see is backwards when they are doing their broadcast! I definitely made a fool of myself trying to follow the pressure system on the screen.

What is the favorite part of your job or workday at the College?

My favorite part of the work day is when I first come in, in the morning. It's nice to reconnect with my coworkers and learn a little bit more about them each day!

What is the most memorable moment you recall from your college or high school experience?

My senior year of high school I was the lead in the Roger's and Hammerstein's musical, Cinderella. I was shocked to get the part of Whitney Houston's character, but I had a lot of fun with it, and learned a lot about my love for performing arts while learning that role!

What was the most courageous or adventurous thing you did in your youth?

I rode horse bareback in the rain a lot. I don't know if that counts as adventurous, but I did break my wrist once while doing it!

What is something you love to do that doesn't fit with how others see you?

I love road tripping! (Usually I'm more of a “get-to-the-destination” kind of person.) I actually love traveling in general. But my favorite form of traveling is a long road trip exploring everything; there's so much to see out there, and I love making vacation unique with fun stops along the way!
