Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Inspiration of the Week:

We’ve been enjoying watching this series on Netflix, called Connected. Science reporter and host Latif Nasser investigates the fascinating and intricate ways that we are connected to each other, the world and the universe at large. From poop, to digits, to dust, to the cloud. It’s not just for science geeks. The perfect mixture of education and entertainment. I’m guessing it will leave you saying WOW about our natural world.

Mindfulness has been found to decrease stress and negative mood states, while increasing psychological well-being and ability to focus. Each session will explore the benefits of mindfulness and lead participants through a series of mindfulness techniques and activities. Recommendations for ways to incorporate mindfulness into daily life will also be suggested. Sessions are 30 minutes. Express interest by emailing paschey@nicc.edu.

Most Fascinating Public Sculptures

Last year, Architectural Digest compiled its editors' list of the most fascinating public sculptures in the world. Some of the most inspired and provocative designs are included: Force of Nature located in several major cities around the world (pictured at left); Les Voyageurs in Marseilles, France; First Generation in Singapore; and, closer to home, Balloon Flower (Red) in the shadow of the new World Trade Center in New York City.

The many sculptures highlighted in the magazine's November 2019 feature are worthy of our attention, when circumstances and safety allow for international travel.

Michelle Markham

Communications Instructor | Dubuque Center

When you were growing up, what game or activity did you absolutely dread playing, and why?

Dodgeball. I did not want to hurt anyone. I was always afraid I would end up nailing someone in the head, or getting nailed in the head!

What is your astrological sign and your birthday? Has anything unusual, funny, amazing or inspiring ever happened because of your astrological sign?

Aries, my birthday is in April. The only crazy thing that happened to me was in college on my second day freshman year, I sat by a girl that had the exact same shirt, jeans and necklace on as me. I found out that we shared the same birthday and we ended up becoming roommates and friends! Not sure if it had anything to do with my sign, but it was a cool coincidence!

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

I tried to think of something else, but I have always wanted to teach. Even as a little girl I would force my siblings to play school with me!

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

I would like to visit Wales or Scotland.

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

I would build a hobby farm and a pumpkin patch. I think it would be awesome for our family to be out in nature, raise animals and bring joy to friends and other family members.
