Sarah Beaman

Clayton County Success Coach / Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Instructor

During your career at Northeast Iowa Community College, what is the nicest thing that ever happened to you, or someone did for you?

When I had my daughter a month before her due date, the support from my colleagues was amazing. At the time, I was still only on the AEL staff and my colleagues rallied together to take care of my students' needs and helped out with gifts/gift cards – which was great since we were not prepared to have the baby early! One of the best things about working at NICC is how understanding everyone is and how much it feels like family. It's been hard in previous jobs to feel stressed about missing work when I have a family emergency, but that is never the case here.

What kid’s movie has completely scarred you for life?

Technically, I was a teenager when it came out, but I'm still appalled by Bad Santa. Santa should never be portrayed like that!

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

I have a specific memory when I was about seven years old. I remember going into the grocery store with my Mom, and after seeing an old man with a permanent frown, I asked her, “Why does he look so mad?" She replied, "Oh honey, he just has frown lines. His face is just kind of stuck like that from years of frowning." In that moment I made a promise to myself (and declared it to her as well) that I never wanted to have frown lines; instead I wanted to have smile lines. I have succeeded so far!

What is something you just realized that you are embarrassed you didn’t realize earlier?

When I have had food in my teeth and no one told me! It's even worse when you know you haven't eaten for a long time and have talked to a lot of people who didn't bother to mention the giant piece of lettuce in your teeth. PLEASE tell me if I have food in my teeth!

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

Once I began my teaching career, I recognized that I enjoy teaching the students that are challenging to teach or have difficulty learning. If I could do it all over again, I would get my undergrad in special education and specialize in K-8 behavioral intervention.
