Career Learning Link is Now College and Career Connection

Career Learning Link will now be called College and Career Connection (CCC) and all of the College’s admission representatives and success coaches, College and Career Coaches. Through CCC, as with the Career Learning Link program, any high school student can participate in business tours, work-based learning activities, job shadowing and mentoring to explore possible careers.

Why the change? Earlier this year, initiatives across the state and US focused on college and career planning as an intentional service to be provided by high schools. For many years, the College has embedded success coaches in every in-district high school and admissions representatives have served out-of-district schools. These College and Career Coaches will continue to provide high schools and students with career resources and activities.

Could Fast-Growing Mini-Forests Stem Climate Change?

Miniature ecosystems, called Miyawaki forests, are finding their way to Europe in a movement to restore biodiversity and address climate change. That's the focus of a 2020 story in The Guardian by Hannah Lewis. Scientists estimate that these forests can store 40 times more carbon than single species plantings. The introduction of Miyawaki forests is based on the work of a Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki, who has planted more than 1,000 of these forests throughout the world.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Nick, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

Ditch that Kitchen Sponge. Did you know that kitchen sponges often contain more bacteria than anywhere else in a house - including the toilet? Eeewww! And if one million households toss one sponge a year, that’s one million sponges sitting in landfills or being incinerated. If one million households toss out one sponge per week, that’s 52 million sponges. With almost 140 million households in the United States, that adds up to a staggering amount of plastic trash.* A more sustainable (and possibly hygienic and cheaper) alternative is a good old washcloth. You can get out a fresh one every day and even after a week, seven washcloths don't even add that much to your laundry. Give it a try and see what you think!

#CutOutCutlery. Do you have a drawer full of plastic cutlery from takeout food? Join Habits of Waste’s campaign to #CutOutCutlery and change habits of single-use plastic cutlery to reduce the 40,000,000,000 plastic utensils that are thrown away each year. The next time you order takeout and you're taking the food home, ask the restaurant to not include the unnecessary forks, knives, spoons and condiments. And use your own reusable cutlery whenever possible, like eating at your desk, where you can easily stash a set. It may seem small, but it really adds up!

Who is your favorite fictional character and why? If you could go on a fun adventure or date with them, what would you do?

My favorite fictional character is Donald Duck. When I was little my Grandpa and I would watch Mickey Mouse together and he would draw Donald Duck for me on paper and on pumpkins. I then fell in love with the character. If I had to go on an adventure date with Donald Duck, I would go sledding like they did in his Christmas movie.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

A country I have always wanted to go to for vacation is Holland or Germany. My family is full German, so I would like to see where I am from. I also want to visit Holland because my favorite flower is the tulip, and they are known for their tulip festival.

If you could kill off any character from a current TV show, who would it be and why?

If I could kill off any character from any TV show it would be Meredith Grey. I understand that they can't do that because she is the main character, but to end the series that would be a good ending. The show would not have any way to continue after that unless they did a spin off. I know this is probably going to make some people upset, but I just feel like the show is not like it used to be and should be over. I am a huge Grey's fan and have watched all the seasons about five times, so I'm not a hater.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete?

I would be a swimmer or on the dive team! I love swimming and diving looks fun.

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

If I had a million dollars to build anything I wanted, I would build a house on a large chunk of land. I would also want a nice outdoor entertainment area with the home. I would not want anything too extravagant for the house so I could have more land.
