GREEN CORNER
Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.
Iowa Waste Exchange. Have you ever gone to throw out something that was still in good condition but you just couldn't use anymore? Did you hesitate because you knew someone out there could use it, if you could just find them? Well, the search is over. THE IOWA WASTE EXCHANGE (IWE) is a materials exchange program. It is a free, non-regulatory and confidential service, with waste management professionals ready to provide individualized and expert waste management and business assistance resulting in both economic and environmental benefits. Since 1990 the IWE has matched more than 3.2 million tons of by-products and materials with groups interested in using or recycling those materials. The IWE helps business and industry, schools, hospitals and communities save disposal costs and protect the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill.*
Learn more or contact Tammy Turner, our area's IWE Resource Specialist, at tturner@inrcog.org or 319.235.0311. She also sends out a helpful monthly newsletter listing specific items.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Share something or an experience that has changed your worldview.
I spent a month in college traveling across the American Southwest learning about environmental policy and public land management, and it really changed the way I view land ownership and water policy in the U.S.
What is the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
I studied in Norway during college, and I think that one of the weirdest foods I had while I was there was a mashed potato dish that was half mashed potatoes and half white fish, all mixed together. It was just so confusing because I took each bite expecting potato and instead it was really fishy!
What item do you buy the most of at a bulk store? (e.g., Costco, Sam’s Club)
I always find myself hoarding apple cider vinegar when I take trips to Costco. I like to have it around because it makes a great natural cleaning product, and if I am sick in the winter I have a bit of it everyday with honey and ginger until I feel better. You can never have enough apple cider vinegar!
What fictional place would you like to visit?
I never really got into the Lord of the Rings books, but when I watched the movie I was obsessed with The Shire, because it seems so cute and just my size!
What is the most unusual job you have had in your life?
Not quite an unusual job, but rather an unusual way to get a job; once, I was chased down the block by an employee waving around an application for a job. I applied and ended up working there for six years!
