TRIO Student Receives National Scholarship

The Educational Opportunity Association Foundation (EOAF) has awarded a scholarship to April White, a Northeast Iowa Community College – TRIO-SSS and PROGRAM student at Peosta. April, of Dubuque, is among 31 students nationally to receive EOAF scholarships in recognition of their academic achievements, involvement in their community and/or their ability to articulate how TRIO/Educational Opportunity Program has played a role in their life. She is enrolled in the Associate of Arts program and plans to transfer to earn a Social Work or Psychology degree.

EOAF exists for the purpose of funding scholarships and fellowships for low-income, first-generation and educational opportunity program students. EOAF develops, manages and distributes funds to provide financial support in the form of scholarships, fellowships and leadership opportunities so that students will successfully complete a college degree.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Erica Knapp

Library Specialist | Peosta Campus

Introduction: Erica received her Master of Library and Information Science, with a Certificate in Book Studies, from the University of Iowa in May 2018. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History, with a Military History concentration, from Southern New Hampshire University online. Erica is originally from Waverly, Iowa, where 91 percent of her immediate family still lives and farms. In her free time, Erica enjoys reading, watching TV and movies, knitting, calligraphy, dreaming about traveling the world and photography. She is a University of Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

What aspects of your upbringing most contributed to shaping the person you came to be and why/how?

I grew up on a beef farm just outside of Waverly. My siblings and I showed cattle from the time we were ten until high school graduation (and beyond, for my two sisters). I was also very active in 4-H and FFA. Combine those activities together, and I developed a very strong work ethic, sense of responsibility and “go-getter” mentality. Without those experiences, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

What do you most want to accomplish at Northeast Iowa Community College?

I want to make the library a central focus point for our students, faculty and staff – not only here at our Peosta campus, but also in Calmar. I want to bring people in to our spaces, let them know about our awesome FREE resources and help them become well-informed citizens of our world.

I also want to bring the library to the community through virtual tools, online sessions and classroom instruction. We live in an increasingly virtual world, and the library strives to keep pace with that. If you can’t come to us, we’d love to come to you!

(If you’re reading this and have an idea about how the library can help you and others, shoot me an email! I’d love to hear from you!)

What famous person would you like to be BFFs with?

Emma Watson. I adore her.

What was your favorite cartoon/comic/book growing up?

Cartoon: That’s a toss-up between “Looney Tunes” and “Tom and Jerry.”

Comic: “Zits.” That comic still cracks me up!

Book: There are so, so many books that I adore from various points growing up, but two really stand out: East by Edith Pattou, and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

I’m passionate about a lot of things, but they all come back to the same core concept: learning, and helping others learn with me.
