Twelve Interesting Facts about Black History Month

Did you know that President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976? He called upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” In an online article this week by Alexis Ty of International Business Times, readers can learn about the origins and objective of the annual commemoration. Why, for example, do we celebrate Black history during the month of February? This month was chosen because of the birthdays of two significant men who greatly influenced the Black population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Writing Tips and Strategies for You: The Virtues of the Web-based Service, Grammarly

Editor's note: All during February, Friday Takeout will devote space to sharing writing tips and strategies for the College community. Whether it’s a simple email or a 25-page report, we can all benefit from a refresher. Today, we look at the virtues of the free web-based software, Grammarly. Katie Burrichter, Associate Director of Marketing, offers her firsthand reaction. Enjoy!

"I started using Grammarly because the web-based software I work with lacked a basic spell-checking function and copying/pasting into Word just to check spelling was time-consuming. I started using Grammarly five years ago and have LOVED it ever since! It does more than just check spelling - it checks grammar and gives synonym suggestions as well. My two favorite things are the new tone detector (see screen shot at right) and weekly writing updates. The weekly reports let me know the areas I made improvements, the top mistakes corrected and how many unique words were used. I believe using Grammarly has improved my writing and I highly recommend it." - Katie

Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

Mindfulness Mondays are back! Mental Health Counseling intern, Yarrow Pasche, will offer a goal-setting and mindfulness program. Mindfulness has been associated with decreased stress and negative mood states, while increasing physiological well-being and ability to focus. Each session will explore the benefits of mindfulness and lead participants through a series of techniques and activities.

Sessions are 30 minutes on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. Program ends March 1, 2021. Please join us! Zoom info.

Inspiration of the Week:

A group of NICC employees will be discussing Becoming a Better Grownup this week as part of a wellness book club. Author Brad Montague filled his book with advice from the very young and the very old. I encourage you to pick up a copy sometime. It’s an easy read, will likely make you chuckle and also serves as a reminder to find your inner kid.

Wellness Podcast! Know someone whose story needs to be heard? I’m seeking candidates for one-on-one interviews to be featured in a new wellness-themed podcast. The podcast will feature NICC employees (and potentially community members) with an inspiring story of personal success, a story about overcoming adversity or grief, or about finding a passion for a new hobby or skill. Email me if you want to be featured or know someone who should be! Yup, EVERYONE has a story to share.

Recipe of the Week:

We had Creamy Mushroom and Spinach Lasagna this weekend. There were even enough for leftovers - yay! I enjoyed this deviation from the standard lasagna recipe, especially because the recipe is heavy on the mushrooms. This time of year, we try and intentionally incorporate mushrooms into dishes. They are the only natural, non-animal source of vitamin D, which we are all short on due to the lack of sunshine.

What is your favorite movie of all time? (in a particular genre, if it’s easier to answer. e.g., comedy, drama, horror, sci fi.)

Snatch, directed by Guy Ritchie. It is hilarious, profane, violent and ridiculously entertaining. Not a great choice for family film night but so much fun.

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

I think I would add engineering or law to my existing environmental background. Those are good value multipliers to a subject area that is, in my opinion, dramatically undervalued on its own so people could stay engaged in a field that is meaningful and be more financially secure.

Is there a book you’ve read that you love so much you’ve read it twice, or even multiple times?

The Hobbit. The storytelling and sense of grand adventure sucks me in every time and I don't read it often enough where I remember every detail, so there are "new" parts every time.

If you could replace all the grass in the world with something else, what would it be?

By "grass" I will assume you mean the uniform manufactured lawns of American suburbia. I would replace them with native vegetation and spaces to feed humanity. Our current managed landscape systems are dramatically destructive to the functioning of the ecosystems we are all parts of. We can do better for other human and non-human inhabitants of our planet and better for ourselves than vast monocultures of consumption.

In one sentence, how would you explain the internet?

Evidence that lack of information was not as significant a barrier to education and making the world a better place that may have been previously thought.

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

I would build a rugby complex in/around Decorah. I love rugby and making something like that a reality would be a source of entertainment for young and old alike for decades!
