Mother with Children who Experienced Sandy Hook Shooting to Give Presentation on March 3

Sean Snyder, Winneshiek County Emergency Management Coordinator, invites members of our College community to attend a powerful presentation by Carly Posey, hosted by Stone Ridge Church in Decorah on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. Carly’s son is a survivor of the Sandy Hook massacre in Newton, Conn. Her story is both powerful and a learning lesson for everyone.

During the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14, 2012, the shooter entered her son’s first grade classroom. After shooting his teacher and a student, the shooter stopped to reload and Carly’s son ran out of the classroom to the fire station nearby. Her fourth grade daughter remained in an art room office at the school. Her two other children were at the middle school in Newtown, in lockdown for the entire day.

Carly’s presentation focuses on the recovery and mental health of her family. She shares how she and her husband helped their children, with different experiences that December day, recover and turn the negative events into lifelong resilience. As mission director for The I Love U Guys Foundation, Carly travels across the county to share her story to motivate and inspire others to be active in safety planning.

When you retire, and assuming you have enough money to do so, what is one cause you would give to because you are passionate about its mission and purpose?

Good question! Personally, I do not have a specific organization in mind. The cause would be children, and I would find an organization that supports and inspires children to be the best they could be. They would have to support that cause. Our children are our future!

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

My full-time profession is a career firefighter/paramedic. If I was to start all over again, the only thing I would change is that I would have received my education earlier and started this same career sooner.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

An African safari is at the top of my bucket list.

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

Hmm ... I have lived a fairly unique life with a lot of extreme experiences. But to pick an age, it would be 15. In short, my life had taken a complete turn for the better that led me on my path today.

Is there a book you’ve read that you love so much you’ve read it twice, or even multiple times?

The Road Less Traveled.
