Military-Affiliated Students Celebrate New Veterans Lounge Next Tuesday!

Remember to break for lunch next Tuesday, Aug. 31, and join us to celebrate the opening of the new Veterans Lounge on campus! From Noon - 1 p.m. Military and Veterans Club (MAVC) members will be gathering in the new space with students, staff and faculty. Ribbon cutting is at 12:15 p.m. The lounge is located in the Peosta campus lower level Main Building near the café.

MAVC is a social and educational organization for active duty, veteran and dependent students. The student club supports military-affiliated students by providing the resources, networking opportunities, social connections and advocacy they need in their transition to college life.

Care Calls Begin Next Week!

Fall semester is off to a great start and it feels amazing to see so many students in person!

Keeping with our semester tradition, Dr. Wee is asking faculty and staff to volunteer for the student outreach campaign, Care Calls. Care Calls is an opportunity to engage with our new students at the beginning of the semester to help ensure a strong start in their academic endeavors.

Outreach will begin Aug. 31. We are asking you to offer an hour or less of your time to make calls as an early connection with students to welcome them to the college, answer any questions and thank the students for choosing NICC. Overwhelmingly, each semester students and family members express their appreciation for the calls!

Volunteers assisting with calls will receive detailed instructions, a sample script and a FAQ resource via email prior to call dates.

CARE CALL VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP

We would love to see some new names on the volunteer list. Thank you for your consideration and willingness to assist our students.

APPETIZER | something for your appetite.

The Mullet Club!

Students pose in the Calmar Student Center with their "NICC Mullet Club" t-shirts. Student Life is offering these free t-shirts to any student sporting a mullet. The fictitious club is a nod to the now once-again-popular haircut.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Nick, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

Back to School. It's back to school time! When shopping for school supplies, see if you can reuse items from previous years, like markers or crayons.

Other Ideas:

  • Find items that are made from postconsumer recycled materials, like paper and folders.

  • For water breaks, snacks and lunch, use reusable bottles, sandwich bags and lunch containers instead of new, individually wrapped packages.

  • While the weather is still pleasant, try to walk or bike to school with the bonus of getting some fresh air and exercise!

  • When colder weather arrives, consider carpooling to save money and gas.

  • Ask your school if they have any sustainability initiatives. This can something as simple as reusing each side of a piece of paper before it's recycled, repurposing old materials for art projects, transitioning the diesel bus fleet to electric or installing solar.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

What is the most irrational fear or phobia that you have?

I hate elevators! I would rather take the stairs to any floor over the slight risk of getting stuck in an elevator.

What is the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?

For being a picky eater, I don’t try many new things. The weirdest food I have tried that I actually liked was calamari.

What is the most unusual job you have had in your life?

Some might not think of it as unusual, but I worked at a meat counter of a grocery store in high school. You don’t see many females doing that, and for how grossed out I get at certain things, it was definitely an unusual job for me.

What fashion trend do you regret?

Looking back at pictures, I always cringe whenever I see myself in gauchos. I definitely regret that fashion trend!

Would you own or use a self-driving car?

I probably will never own a self-driving car, but it would be awesome to at least try one out.
