Employee Support Fund Information for You

Last year the Advancement office started two new funds. One of the funds is designed to help our students who are in need, but not in a crisis; they may need money for food or help with a bill or technology, books, tuition or other needs. The second fund is to help our employees. We recognize that there may be times in our employees’ lives when you may need help. For this purpose, the Advancement office created the Employee Support Fund. Anyone can contribute and anyone can benefit who is an employee of the College.

An employee can apply when they have an unusual need, loss of income or other unexpected life circumstances. Learn more about the fund.

Foundation Office Donor Impact Report Awarded!

The Spring issue of the Foundation office’s Donor Impact Report won a Bronze CASE District VI Institutional Award! The publication, developed by the Advancement, Marketing and External Relations offices, was honored in the Publications > Fundraising - Annual Reports and Fund Reports category.

Judges reviewing the publication for the competition stated: “This is a great example of a donor impact report. It features a variety and good balance of student impact stories and relevant statistics. We also appreciated the nice use of brand colors, graphic elements and unique size.”

Congratulations, and great work!

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

"Five Minutes of Crafting Joy" - The first day of spring is Saturday, March 20, so for the foreseeable future there are still plenty of chilly evenings and snowy weekends for indoor projects. College social science instructor, Valerie Gunhus, shared a recent craft she mastered (shown at right).

Here are some tutorials of DIY paper stars:

Inspiration of the Week:

Have you checked out the new NICC Garden Club page within Brightspace? This is a great resource for anyone who is interested in gardening! College science instructor, Molly Schiel, will be updating the page frequently with Garden Club events, workshop information, tips and tricks and so much more. If you are interested in joining the Garden Club page, please email Molly at schielmo@nicc.edu

Recipe of the Week:

Cabbages are packed with nutrients. Need ideas for cabbage? Here are some ideas beyond coleslaw and a link to Mark Bittman’s “Cabbage, 12 ways.”

As an aside: I know someone in Northeast Iowa who harvests cabbages well into December. He grows them close to the foundation of his house under an old window frame.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

My husband and I hope to visit Ireland someday. We would love to see many of its attractions and tour the beautiful country!

If you could replace all the grass in the world with something else, what would it be?

Flowers! … of all kinds.

In one sentence, how would you explain the internet?

The internet is incredibly useful, an inexcusable time waster and unbelievable in its advancements!

If you could create a holiday, what would be called and how would we celebrate it?

A day in the middle of May called "Get Outside Day" or "Happy Planting" to help us celebrate the wonders of springtime.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete?

Gymnastics, because I love to watch the extreme flexibility and talent of the athletes. It is also one sport in PE (Physical Education) that I really enjoyed. When I was a child I used to practice for hours trying to do the perfect cartwheel and handstand.

If you have input on a upcoming feature, Big Fish, something to celebrate or a suggestion, email us at news@nicc.edu!
