An Important Reminder to all NICC Employees

Reminder to our colleagues: You should only dial “9” when calling an external contact from your campus or center location. Use “9” then the 10-digit phone number (e.g., 9-563-555-1212).

You should not dial “1” before the phone number, as this could result in accidentally placing a 911 call.

Be sure to log in to Micolab for access to the campus phone directory. For help with other phone issues, contact the Helpdesk at ext. 555.

2020 Student Crisis Fundraiser Wrap-Up

We wanted to share an update from the 2020 Giving with Gratitude Student Crisis Fundraiser Silent Auction. We reached 100 percent of our goal, raising $8,654.66 for the Student Crisis Fund (including $550 in donations to the NICC Give Page, $450 in free-will donations and $327 from the Student Life Holiday Meal)! This amount can help more than 50 students with essential school-related expenses (at the average awarded amount). This year's district-wide silent auction raised over $1,000 more than last year's Calmar and Peosta Silent Auctions combined, even with less donated auction items! We want to say THANK YOU, we could not have done it without all of you!

With Appreciation,

NICC Student Crisis Fundraiser Committee

The New York Times 2020 In Photos: A Year Like No Other

People in America and across the world say that this year was one of the most historic and memorable years ever. The New York Times this week published a feature online that highlighted 12 different photos to chronicle the months that spanned 2020.

Dean Baquet, NYT executive editor, opined: “Certain years are so eventful they are regarded as pivotal in history, years when wars and slavery ended and deep generational fissures burst into the open – 1865, 1945 and 1968 among them.”

Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

How about celebrating what’s right in the word? Listen to this uplifting TEDx Celebrate What's Right With The World by Dewitt Jones, National Geographic photographer.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with TED … it is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. They believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. Their agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation. TED stands for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design.”

Inspiration of the Week:

Join your Northeast Iowa Community College for the 2020 Holiday Mask Contest! Deadline to submit your photo is Monday, Dec. 21. Get the details.

Wellness Activity:

Cozy Corner! As you prepare for the holidays, the winter solstice or just are starting to bed down for winter, what does your warmth look like? Take us to your home and share an image with us! Maybe it’s your fireplace, a big chair with a lap dog, a traditional Christmas tree, boughs of holly, mistletoe, a menorah, a cup of hot chocolate. You decide and share! Post your photos here or on the NICC Employee Facebook Page.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

What is your astrological sign and your birthday? Has anything unusual, funny, amazing or inspiring ever happened because of your astrological sign?

My birthday is Aug. 17 and I am a textbook Leo. When I was attending Clinton Community College I received the Student Leadership Award. I truly did not see it coming. I was a nontraditional student, went to school, did my thing and went home. I found out that my advisor nominated me and when I asked him "Why me?" he replied with, "I see you in the hall interacting with the other students and teachers, and you just ooze leadership.” In my younger years I was told I was bossy; I guess over time I graduated to a leader.

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

40. I am four months in and my mental state has completely changed. I no longer care what other people think of me. I have never felt more like my true self.

Give your colleagues a suggestion: what are 1, 2, or 3 of your favorite smartphone apps?

Calm App!!! This app has sounds and stories to fall asleep to, guided meditations and classes to better understand mindfulness, habits and other things to guide you to your best self. There are even things for children.

In one sentence, how would you explain the internet?

The internet has replaced money as the number one necessary evil.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete?

Definitely synchronized swimming!
