WEEKLY FEATURE | good to know.

Look for the College's Newspaper Insert Next Week: "The Graduates You Rely On."

The College's Marketing and External Relations offices have placed a newspaper insert in nearly every newspaper, and a few shoppers, throughout northeast Iowa. Look for the insert next week! "The Graduates You Rely On" shares alumni data from 2010-2018, including the number of graduates in specific cluster areas, total degrees/diplomas earned and the number of companies that employ our graduates. The centerpiece layout and back page highlights six graduates who each represent a career cluster area and shares their successful educational and career journey after completing their education at Northeast Iowa Community College. The front page of the insert reminds district residents to vote in the Bond Levy Continuation special election on Sept. 11. We hope you enjoy! If you have any questions or feedback, please contact the External Relations office at news@nicc.edu.

APPETIZERS | just a little something.

Early Voting Site Brings in more than 100 Dubuque County Voters!

The Early Voting Site hosted at the Peosta campus for the Sept. 11 Bond Continuation Vote brought in a steady stream of community members to cast their ballots this week. The College exceeded its goal to attract 100 voters to the site: 104 Dubuque County voters participated!

If going to the polls on Sept. 11 is your plan, check out new updates made to www.nicc.edu/bondlevy! All designated polling sites for the Sept. 11 vote are organized by school district and county in the first drop down menu.

Faculty members: from Tuesday, Sept. 4 through Tuesday, Sept. 11, please remind your students to vote. The webpage shown above has information on the Bond Levy Continuation Vote and why this ballot measure is important to the future of the College.

The Benefits of Gratitude

Well, that’s a wrap on the 2018 #NICCProud Week! I hope you’ve shown your best spirit, donated a pair of shoes or two, submitted a photo for the #NICCProud Photo Contest, and scavaged for shoes.

Today, Friday, Aug. 31, has been dubbed NICC Appreciation Day. What can you do to show your appreciation? Take a moment to be grateful, a key ingredient to your well-being. Gratitude can make you happier, improve your relationships and serve as an antidote to depression. A growing body of evidence suggests it’s beneficial to your physical health, too! How does it improve health? Studies show grateful people report falling asleep more quickly, sleeping longer, having better sleep quality and staying awake more easily during the day. Besides helping you sleep, gratitude may lead to engage in healthy eating and not smoking (other good health behaviors).

Here’s an easy exercise to show your gratitude: send someone sunshine. Let someone know how much they mean to you. The exercise can be simple -- a card, a note, a few words of appreciation. Just try it!

Be well,

Flannery

What is something you have done that would surprise others who never knew?

I am an active runner and have run some half marathons and one full marathon. It still surprises me that I ran the marathon as I was never one for distance running until I started running around 12-13 years ago. Now, I really enjoy it. The marathon itself was a lot of fun, but the training for it was challenging.

What was the most courageous or adventurous thing you did in your youth?

The most adventurous thing I did in my youth was in the later years of high school. My two best friends and I put together $250 to buy a 1974 Chevy Impala. We proceeded to completely cut the top of the car off, so we had a permanent “convertible” for our personal use. We had a lot of fun in the car and ended up selling it for more than we paid for it (for the engine) when we went our separate ways to college.

What is the most memorable moment you recall from your college or high school experience?

My most memorable moments from high school revolve around sports. I was fortunate to be a part of some good sports team and was able to earn a state championship and state runner up in baseball and a third place finish in a state track relay.

Do you believe that more technology in the classroom or in the world is helping students learn? If yes (or “no, it isn’t”), why?

I think technology is being utilized effectively in many ways to help students learn better. Education has really changed in so many ways due to technology. However, I also think it’s important to evaluate new technology as it becomes available to make sure it fits well into the class and subject matter being taught.

What is your favorite type of ice cream? Candy bar?

These are “ice-breaker” questions I often use during the first class meeting, so I thought it was a good topic to highlight. My favorite ice cream is twist! My favorite candy bar is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but I like almost all kinds of candy bars! As the semester progresses, I sometimes have a question of the day segment like this and let the students choose the questions throughout the semester (as long as they are appropriate). It's a way to continue to get to know each other as the course moves along.
