Ways to Celebrate Earth Week 2020 this Weekend

The world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this Wednesday. Even with the constraints of social distancing and travel restrictions, there are many ways to continue the celebration this week and beyond. Celebrate Earth Day by appreciating and respecting the natural world. Here are some ideas to inspire you:

Go for a walk in the woods. Go solo or turn it into a nature scavenger hunt with the family.

Feed the birds. Make a simple bird feeder using a pine cone, peanut butter, bird seed and string. Bonus: learn some bird calls and talk to your feathered friends!

Create driveway or sidewalk art. All you need is chalk and a little imagination. Business and Community Solutions Operations Program Manager, Sarah Lensen, and her sister, Danielle, made this beautiful sidewalk chalk masterpiece for the neighborhood this week! (Photo)

Support our native bees. The super-pollinators of the garden are native bees. Right now, many Midwest nurseries will sell and ship bare root and potted native wildflower species that attract pollinators.

Other Outdoor Activities

JUST DESSERTS | let's celebrate.

Inspiration of the Week!

Sara Hageman, Development Officer, is in it for the long run. Literally! Sara tackled 50 miles(!) last Saturday in a solo ultra raceon hilly gravel, mind you! (Read her race report.) Sara says now is the perfect time to embrace long distance training: “For anyone who has wanted to try to go a longer distance with running, walking, biking or anything, now is the perfect time to do it! It is a great extra motivator to get you through each day, and it shows that even though it FEELS like parts of our lives are on hold right now, we can still be making progress every day during this time towards getting to where we want to be!”

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Amy Rausch

Respiratory Care Program Director and Instructor | Peosta Campus

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

I would still choose Respiratory Therapy as a career choice, especially with the pandemic happening today. Many people diagnosed with COVID-19 are requiring mechanical ventilation, and Respiratory Therapists are essential in the ability to operate those ventilators properly. I am proud of all of our graduates who are now working in the field and those working with COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Units.

Give your colleagues a suggestion: what are 1, 2, or 3 of your favorite smart phone apps?

Right now my favorite app is CamScanner. This allows you to scan documents with your phone. Sometimes students need me to sign documents so this allows me to sign them and scan them with my phone and then email them. I also use My Fitness Pal to keep up with trying to eat healthy and exercise.

When you were growing up, what game or activity did you absolutely dread playing, and why? \

I would say I hated to play tag. I feel like I am a pretty athletic person, but I am a very slow runner so I was “it” a lot.

Who is your favorite comedian?

I absolutely love watching Ellen DeGeneres. She is more of a talk show host, but I end up laughing every time I see her talk show or game show. “Be kind to one another.”-Ellen DeGeneres.

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

When I was eight years old, I had a near death experience and had to be resuscitated on the school playground. I can still recall every moment of that day up until I lost consciousness. I am forever grateful for the teachers who saved my life that day.
