Western Dubuque Football Makes a Great Run to State Championship!

Darci Werner, switchboard operator at Peosta, has cheered on her son Brock (pictured at left with Darci) and the Western Dubuque football team for two years, joining parents to serve chocolate milk after practice and supporting the team at every game. This fall Western Dubuque earned a state berth after finishing the season ranked 4th in Iowa Class 3A. Brock, a graduating senior and the Bobcats' kicker, joined his team in a match-up against 2017 state champion Cedar Rapids Xavier on Nov. 15. Western Dubuque fell to Xavier, 34-20, and was named the 2018 Class 3A State Runner Up.

"They played an amazing game against Xavier. We had many NICC staff and faculty cheering them on at the game and at home via radio and TV," said Darci. "We are very proud of them. The athletic director at Western Dubuque informed the team at an all-school assembly that he received many emails and calls from people, coaches and other athletic directors complimenting this team for their outstanding sportsmanship."

Welcome to Northeast Iowa Community College!

What is something you have done that would surprise others who never knew?

I got to sing on a stage in front of 6,000 people. Probably one of the coolest moments of my life.

What is the favorite part of your job or workday at the College?

I love getting to connect with a potential student, talk them through everything and then watch the weight of the world leave their shoulders. I feel like there are so many students who are feeling the stress of high school graduation or the stress of changing their career path. I don't want them to believe that change as a bad thing; to instead think of it as something exciting and something they have control of. We get to help them take control of their destiny! Helping them realize that is what it’s all about!

What childhood experience most impacted your current set of values or your career path?

I come from a huge family. I have five siblings (two sets of twins) and I have about 60 first cousins – we're all close. My mom also teaches special education. My family constantly takes in strangers and invites them to holiday celebrations. Being raised like that means that I'm also constantly doing the same. I have been raised to believe that strangers were just friends you haven't met yet. Love everybody.

What is something you love to do that doesn't fit with how others see you?

I love going on outdoor adventures! I love to sit on the boat all day, go camping in the wilderness or even hike for hours with no destination.

Do you have any particularly strong loyalties to consumer brands (i.e., Ford vs. Chevy, Coke vs. Pepsi, etc.)?

Does JIF peanut butter count? My dad always said never go generic on toilet paper or peanut butter, and nothing has ever rang so true. JIF peanut butter is by far the most significant of all the peanut butters.
