Governor Reynolds Designates October as Brain Health Awareness Month

Governor Kim Reynolds has designated October as Brain Health Awareness Month in Iowa, a proclamation that advises changes to official language surrounding "mental illness" and to reframe these conditions as "brain health."

This is great news to the organization Brain Health Now, a partner with the College for the Brain Health Summit event on Oct. 19. The organization was founded by Debi Butler in 2017 after she experienced a family member’s decades-long struggle with illness. She is passionate about destigmatizing mental illness.

"We want to normalize the perceptions of these conditions affecting one out of every five people in the US. Simply put, the brain is an organ and it can get sick too,” Butler said.

What is the best parenting tip?

The best parenting tip is to set a good example; children are always watching and learning from their parents and those around them.

A person who doesn’t know they have greatly impacted my life is _____________. Please explain.

Being a nurse was the furthest thing from my mind, but a friend of mine's mother was a nurse, and she encouraged me to become a nurse. I had always admired her and figured if she thought I could do it then I would give it a chance. I am so grateful for her encouragement!

Share something or an experience that has changed your worldview.

In my nursing career I have been fortunate to be able to work on an Oncology unit and also in Hospice. Working with these patients and their families has impacted my life. It has helped to put life in perspective and to realize what is important in the scheme of life.

Would you rather meet your ancestors or your descendants? Please explain.

I would rather meet my ancestors. I would like to know where I came from, and to be able to ask them questions so as to not repeat mistakes. Meeting ancestors might also explain certain characteristics that make you wonder where it came from.

Would you own or use a self-driving car?

I have to admit there are times when I am commuting to and from work that I wish I had a self-driving car, but ultimately I am a person that likes to be in control of what I am doing, so I would not own a self-driving car.
