WEEKLY FEATURE | good to know.

With great sadness we share that our dear colleague and friend, Kathy Davis, passed away last Tuesday, March 25.

Kathy joined Northeast Iowa Community College in fall 1990, and she taught and counseled students. She retired last August and we celebrated her, with her family in the Peosta cafeteria.

Kathy had a generous heart, and her passion and compassion touched many lives. We keep Kathy's husband, Chuck, and their two sons, Billy and Tommy, in our prayers. Let's lift each other up in her memory.

As we set up our temporary home office spaces, I encourage you to share them! Perhaps a photo of your new view or a snap of your (fuzzy) coworker? Your coworkers have been busy at work creating ways of keeping our spirits high, check out Google Folder “Isolation 2020 and request to join the Northeast Iowa Community College Employees Group (search on Facebook) to share photos of your home office, positive thoughts and expressions of gratitude. As a self-care tip, I encourage you to try and ignore content on social media right now that isn’t serving you.

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

Inhale / Exhale / Repeat

Inspiration of the Week:

“In this dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or untended in the world. Do not focus on that. There is a tendency too to fall into being weakened by persevering on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be. Do not focus there ... We are needed, that is all we can know.” -Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Home Workout of the Week:

Workout Week of March 23, 2020 - check out some exercises you can do from the comfort of your own home. You need little to no equipment.

Recipe of the Week:

Here’s a new twist - Baked Oatmeal. Baked oatmeal is easy and a nice change of pace for breakfast. The recipe requires eggs and milk, but it’s a nice way to stretch eggs and you can use some yogurt in place of the milk. Also, go ahead and replace the fresh or frozen blueberries with another fruit or skip the fruit entirely.

Family/Kids Activity of the Week:

The birds are returning! Start learning your bird calls and add this impressive skill to your résumé. With some diligence and practice you can eventually show this off at your next family gathering or social event.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Janice Ollendick

Cosmetology Instructor | Calmar Campus

When you retire, and assuming you have enough money to do so, what is one cause you would give to because you are passionate about its mission and purpose?

I would give to the Iowa Donor Network. Iowa Donor Network is a full service organ and tissue recovery organization that acts as the intermediary between donors, physicians and the hospital staff. I am a volunteer for the Iowa Donor Network and I am very passionate about educating people about the importance of being organ, tissue and eye donors. In 2005, our 22-year-old son was killed in a car accident. He was a registered organ donor and from his donations, he saved one life and helped so many more people.

If I could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

If I could start all over again with a career, my choice would remain the same – a career in cosmetology. I find such satisfaction that I am doing what I love to do every day, and I'm helping people look and feel their best.

Is there a book you've read that you love so much you've read it twice, or even multiple times?

I have read The Notebook several times. It is a 1996 romantic novel by Nicholas Sparks. The Notebook is a tender story about the enduring power of love, a story of miracles that will stay with you forever.

If you could replace all of the grass in the world with something else, what would it be?

I would replace all of the grass in the world with wildflowers. wildflowers grow freely, resiliently and beautifully. Wildflowers represent love and joy.

If you could choose one cartoon character to be your best friend, what character would you choose?

I would choose Winnie the Pooh to be my best friend. Winnie the Pooh is a loyal friend who is always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He believes in others.

"You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

- Winnie-the-Pooh

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”

- Winnie-the-Pooh
