Community, Staff and Faculty Celebrate Official Opening of New Veterans Lounge

We celebrated the opening of the new Veterans Lounge at Peosta this week! Military and Veterans Club (MAVC) members will use the space to gather with other veterans, make friendships and de-stress during the semester. The lounge is located in the Peosta campus lower level Main Building near the café.

The event on Tuesday featured the singing of the national anthem by the Dubuque Hempstead High School Choir, a moment of silence in remembrance of the 13 fallen soldiers in Afghanistan and a message of gratitude from Dr. Wee. The ceremony also featured a few remarks from Director of Registration and Retention, Sheila Becker, and MAVC Vice President, Valerie Gassman, a US Navy spouse. NICC military-affiliated students led by Gassman celebrated with a ribbon cutting. See photos.

MAVC is a social and educational organization for active duty, veteran and dependent students. The student club supports military-affiliated students by providing the resources, networking opportunities, social connections and advocacy they need in their transition to college life.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

Looking to lower your energy footprint and electric bill? Try adjusting your thermostat up 2-5 degrees in the summer and 2-5 degrees down in the winter. While it might seem small, this change can help save upwards of 10% each month on your energy bill! Also, keeping your home a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter lessens your energy output, which conserves overall greenhouse gas emissions! Better for the environment, and better for your wallet! Learn more about the benefits of adjusting your thermostat here. If you can’t handle the heat, even adjusting the thermostat while you are away from the house can make a big difference!

You can also increase your energy efficiency by employing some simple weatherization tactics. The Green Iowa AmeriCorps team at the Winneshiek Energy District conducts home energy assessments in the region to assist folks with making their homes more energy efficient. You can get more information about these audits on the Energy District website.

How do you feel about people and/or yourself cursing?

I think cursing has its place in conversation. However, there are times and places for it. It doesn't belong in professional or scholastic discussions. But in casual conversation with friends, a well-placed curse word can be a sentence enhancer.

What fashion trend do you regret?

Not to age myself, but cross colors and jean overall shorts.

Who would be on your all-time fantasy basketball team?

Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Steph Curry, Wilt Chamberlain.

What fictional place would you like to visit?

Hogwarts or Middle Earth.

Would you own or use a self-driving car?

I would. I already use a car that corrects my driving and keeps me in the middle of the lane, and adjusts its speed based on cars in front of me. I think a fully autonomous car is the next step in that progression.
