Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

I read through The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies recently for some inspiration for the Lemonade. This book contains more than 1,000 natural remedies for the prevention, treatment and cure of common ailments and conditions.

I thought the following points were good reminders for a healthy diet, especially when trying to preserve the nutritional content of foods:

  1. Eat the skins of vegetables.

  2. Don’t cut, wash, soak fruits and vegetables until you are ready to eat them.

  3. Eat brown, unpolished rice and whole grains.

  4. Nutritional value decreases with age for both fruits and vegetables. Fresh is best, then frozen.

  5. Eat raw vegetables whenever possible, use as little water as possible when cooking. Try saving the water you’ve boiled vegetables in for gravy or sauces. This water holds a lot of vitamins.

Inspiration of the Week:

Drumroll! The pumpkin weighed in at 474 lbs.! Winner of the Guessing Game is Todd Hills, Industrial Technology instructor at Calmar. Todd guessed 435 lbs. Thanks to all 80 of you who took your best guess. If anyone has additional ideas for fun campus-wide contests, please send them my direction.

Recipe of the Week:

Who else adores a fusion of two or more cuisines in a dish? Thai Chicken Enchiladas merges a concept that originated in Mexico (enchiladas) with some elements of Asian cuisine into a dish that you can toss cabbage, carrots, onions and peppers. It is really neither cuisine, but maybe will become a tradition in your household.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

When you retire, and assuming you have enough money to do so, what is one cause you would give to because you are passionate about its mission and purpose?

I would give to a foundation started in memory of my cousin: Chelsey's Dream Foundation. Chelsey passed away in 2014 due to uterine and ovarian cancer. When she found out there was to be a benefit in her behalf, she didn't feel she deserved it and thought she would pass prior to the funds being raised. She asked her family to give money to those who are unable to conceive and will need assistance adopting. The foundation is still going today, and 75 children have been adopted so far! I will always cherish this foundation and get chills every time a family that Chelsey has brought together speaks of her and her family.

Is there a book you’ve read that you love so much you’ve read it twice, or even multiple times?

Definitely the Harry Potter series. It never gets old and I get all the feelings every time through and cannot put the books down. My oldest nephew expressed interest in starting to read them, and that was one of the coolest moments for me. I am happy he will be introduced into the Harry Potter world and can geek out with me as we discuss spells and try to get the family involved in a Quidditch game.

If you could morph two animals to make one super animal what would you choose and why?

This may sound silly, but I would morph our two German Shorthair Pointer dogs together. That way they can have an extra-long life, and we selfishly don't have to lose them. They both have wonderful personalities and are so loving; they'd be the best super animal.

What kid’s movie has completely scarred you for life?

This is fitting for the season: Hocus Pocus. I have never understood the hype about this movie! It is rated PG, but has witches sucking the life out of children, so much so that one girl dies! What is the joy of this?! I see everyone ecstatic during Halloween season to watch this movie and, meanwhile, I cringe. And the eerie "I Put a Spell on You" popular song? No thanks!

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

I always wanted to build a large shelter for dogs. But I am such an animal lover, I don't think I could stop at dogs. I would probably turn our farm into a "funny farm" and have a huge indoor/outdoor area for all of the stray animals that need help. I would hire a great team to assist in making sure the animals are fed, loved and get along!
