Join us for a conversation about brain health and connection. The College will host TEDx speaker/international brain health educator, trainer and advocate David Woods Bartley for a keynote address, Sometimes What Hurts the Most Can’t Be Seen; and sometimes what helps the most is easy to do. Brain health does not look a certain way. As it stands now, its many evil incarnations are inflicting devastating harm on people in all demographics and in all parts of their lives including, home, worship, school and work. Recent suicides of the famous, the accomplished and the seemingly content points to the fact that much lies behind a forced smile, a distracting joke or a “perfect” life. This keynote address chronicles the story of David’s journey from the brink of suicide to the experience of brain health. Leveraging stories, he shares the causes of his condition, the lessons he has learned and the simple actions we can each take to bring about the most life affirming gift of all; connection.

Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Inspiration of the Week:

At 20-years-old, Chris Nikic (pictured) became the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman. He swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles, and ran 26.2 miles in just under 17 hours at Ironman Florida. Chris has a great tagline/campaign “1% better everyday.” Chris has a goal of being the best he can be to inspire others. I’d say it’s working! Check out more about Chris’s story and the 1% Better Challenge.

Self-Care Tip of the Week

Want to sleep better? Here is something to try. Yoga before B-E-D.

Recipe of the Week:

As you prepare for any holiday meal(s), I’d encourage you to think about supporting local growers. This is a huge win-win for you and the farmer. Your financial support helps our local economy and you’re guaranteed the freshest produce possible right now … brussels sprouts, beets, greens, squash, garlic, potatoes and more! There’s still a lot of produce available and/or look for meat, dairy and eggs!

The Iowa Food Hub is an online market for purchasing local food with pick-ups in Waukon, West Union and Decorah. Here’s their online directory and details. Resources for finding local food in Dubuque County are here.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Allison Grainger

Early Childhood Education Instructor | Peosta Campus

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

The four years I spent working as a camp counselor at Camp EWALU in Strawberry Point will forever remain some of my favorites. Working with children, caring for creation, living in community, and backpacking, rock climbing and canoeing through Northeast Iowa (Yes, you can do all three right here!) are memories I will never forget.

Who is your favorite comedian?

This fall, our household has been having some good laughs with comedian Jack Whitehall in his Netflix show, “Travels with My Father.” Jack and his begrudging father, Michael, document their travels around the world and highlight their wildly different ideas about travel, adventure, fun and literally everything else they encounter. Hilarity ensues!

Is there a book you’ve read that you love so much you’ve read it twice, or even multiple times?

I am a teacher, so I get to read for a living! (How awesome is that?!) Before coming to NICC, I taught preschool for several years and read multiple books to kids every day. There are numerous children’s books that I have memorized because I’ve read them so many times. One of my favorites is “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. It’s fun to read and every year my students asked me to read it over and over and over again!

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

I would love to visit East Asia someday. I have never been to that part of the world and it looks so beautiful. Cooking and trying new foods both bring me joy, so taking a food tour through that region of the world sounds delightful!

Give your colleagues a suggestion: what are 1, 2, or 3 of your favorite smart phone apps?

The Libby app is one of my favorites. It is a wonderful source of e-books, audiobooks, podcasts and more. It is connected with the Dubuque Public Library so everything is free with a library card!

If you could choose one cartoon character to be your best friend, what character would you choose?

Pete the Cat is a favorite character of mine from a beloved children’s book series. When times get tough, wise and fun-loving Pete reminds readers through rhymes and songs to “keep on singing!” We all could use a friend like Pete!
