WEEKLY FEATURE | good to know.

Join Northeast Iowa Community College for Great Give Day on May 13!

The NICC Foundation will be participating in Great Give Day on Thursday, May 13. This is a 24-hour giving blitz established by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque that allows us to raise money to benefit our students. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $5,000 for our students that day.

The Foundation explains how this year’s event will work:

When you make a donation to the NICC Foundation on Great Give Day, your name will be entered into a drawing. Each time we raise $1,000, we will draw a name (LIVE on Facebook). The donor whose name is drawn will have the ability to nominate a student to receive a $1,000 “Silver Ticket” scholarship. That Silver Ticket can help keep students out of college loan debt.

On Great Give Day, the Community Foundation also holds hourly competitions among all the non-profit organizations that are taking part in Great Give Day. We will be taking part in the “Most Donors in One Hour” competition, happening from 8-9 a.m. If we win that competition, NICC receives an extra $500 prize for our students. Note: NICC has won that competition for the past three years. Let’s do it again!

Thanks in advance for supporting our students on Great Give Day.

GREEN CORNER

Kara and Nick, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

We hope everyone enjoyed the warm weather last weekend. As we look towards summer, there are many ways to help conserve energy and lower cooling bills.

Turning up the thermostat by seven to 10 degrees Fahrenheit for eight hours a day, especially when you are not home, can save you up to 10 percent on your cooling costs. Closing blinds, curtains and shades during the day can also help by not allowing the sun to heat up the inside of your home or office. Or alternately, opening windows on nice days utilizes natural ventilation and gives a breath of fresh air! Read more tips here.

APPETIZER | something for your appetite.

Student Crisis Fund Renamed in Honor of the late Kathryn J. Davis, Counselor

The NICC Student Crisis Fund Committee renamed the Student Crisis Fund in honor of Kathy Davis, Peosta campus counselor, who died on March 24, 2020. A new Crisis Fund Dedication page, linked to the Student Crisis Fund webpage, went live April 20, Kathy's birthday. The fund is now the Kathryn J. Davis Student Crisis Fund.

Kathy proudly and actively spent 30 years as a counselor at NICC. She dedicated herself to assisting in any activity that enriched and encouraged students to reach their personal and educational goals.

BIG FISH | be amazed.

Compliance Coordinator | Calmar Campus

What is the age in your life that stands out as the most memorable, and why?

These last few years for sure. I graduated from Iowa State with a Political Science degree, and then lived and worked in Nairobi, Kenya, for about two years before moving back to Iowa and having the opportunity to work here.

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

I studied political science at Iowa State, and am heavily interested in politics, so I would work on political campaigns or as a political advisor.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

I have visited Singapore and Indonesia and absolutely loved it, and hope to continue exploring the rest of the South East Asia region on vacation some day.

When you retire, and assuming you have enough money to do so, what is one cause you would give to because you are passionate about its mission and purpose?

I love being outdoors and exploring nature, and I hope to volunteer with and be able to support environmental and sustainability initiatives.

In one sentence, how would you explain the internet?

The internet is a collection of the entirety of human understanding, which we use to look at pictures of animals and get into arguments with strangers.
