Central College in Pella Makes 51 Percent Reduction in Annual Tuition

Central College in Pella, Iowa, was in news headlines this past week after making a dramatic decrease in tuition at the four-year private college. Beginning in fall 2020, annual tuition will drop to $18,600 from $38,600, a 51 percent price reduction. The college, founded in 1853, serves approximately 1,100 undergraduates.

Gary Steinke, president of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and who previously served as executive director of the Iowa Board of Regents, shared his reaction in a Des Moines Register story: "I can certainly tell you, within the state of Iowa, this is historic. Their new published tuition is about half of what it was. I'm sort of at a loss for words. I think it's the most rare thing that I've seen in public or private education."

Central College President Mark Putnam said that the tuition reduction more accurately reflects the way people think about "the value of education in relation to the price."

Terry Jenkins

Math Faculty | Peosta Campus

Could you share a little about yourself?

My name is Dr. Terry Jenkins. I have taught math and science for almost 50 years. I am married to Sheila and we have three children and seven grandchildren under the age of nine. My favorite sport is hockey, and we have season tickets to the Dubuque Fighting Saints. On a lesser note, I also like the Cubs, Hawkeyes, Blackhawks and Bears.

Who or what shaped your sense of humor?

Very early in my life my dad shaped my sense of humor. He always had a joke to tell. My kids think their dad is funny. I always did like Alfred E. Newman.

What experience most prepared you for your current role at the College?

My mom always said I was “overeducated.” However, my four degrees and vast teaching experience has certainly prepared me for teaching at Northeast Iowa Community College. I love sharing my science knowledge with my students.

If you could invent any product, no matter how unrealistic it may seem, what would it be and what would it do?

I would love to invent a time machine. I could go back in time to see dinosaurs, talk to Isaac Newton and spend time with my grandfather. I could then offer advice about time travel to the cast members of the “Big Bang Theory.”

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

In the past few years I have become very passionate about my grandkids. It is a great time to be alive. Kids at that age speak about whatever comes into their heads, like: why would I rather watch the news when “Paw Patrol” is on? And you realize your time on mother Earth is limited; I want to spend quality time with my three granddaughters and four grandsons. Now they are at the age, that they like to spend time with “Papa.”

Which famous person would you like to be BFFs with?

I would have liked to have been BFF with Galileo at the time he tried to convince people that the Earth revolved about the Sun. He had so many breakthrough discoveries, like observing those four large moons of Jupiter.
