HR Department Guidelines for Staff/Faculty Volunteers

  • Hourly workers can volunteer for a maximum of two hours of paid leave with supervisor’s approval. For those who wish to volunteer for a whole or half day, the balance beyond two hours needs to be taken as vacation time.

  • Salaried employees are free to flex time and volunteer, but they should also take vacation for any time away from work beyond two hours on that day with supervisor’s approval.

WELLNESS 360 | be well.

Pandemic Response Team (PRT) Update

  • The CDC unveiled new mask guidelines for Americans who are fully vaccinated. If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing many things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic. The CDC published a new graphic to assist people with Choosing Safer Activities. The PRT continues to monitor the ever-changing guidance and will communicate with the College community as restrictions are modified.

  • One hundred and thirty-seven people participated in the Calmar campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic on April 22. The 2nd dose clinic is scheduled for Thursday, May 13, from 9 a.m.-Noon in the Student Center. There will be additional vaccinators available to reduce waiting times. Hy-Vee plans to email the 2nd dose registration link to all participants within the next week.

  • If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, you can find a provider by clicking on this link or by dialing 211 and asking to speak to a Vaccine Navigator. The vaccine is much more widely available now. Check with your local public health agency, healthcare provider or pharmacy to find a vaccination option that works for you.

  • Watch for a message from Dr. Wee early next week regarding the summer and fall semesters.

Is there a book you’ve read that you love so much you’ve read it twice, or even multiple times?

A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome. It's a quick, easy read. It spans through one single, 24-hour day during Trajan's Rome. Each chapter is basically an hour starting from 6 a.m., around the clock. I bought two copies of this book just in case something ever happens to the first one.

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

Rome, because of the aforementioned book. I'd also like to visit Tokyo, Japan. Or just about anywhere in Japan.

What kid’s movie has completely scarred you for life?

Poltergeist (1982). It's not a kid's movie, but it's a movie I saw as a kid.

If you could create a holiday, what would be called and how would we celebrate it?

I'd create a gaming holiday, or what I would simply call, "Game Day.” We sort of have this with the Super Bowl, being that it's practically a national holiday. Someone already invented a similar holiday called, "Winter-een-mas.” But I would create Game Day. It's a day to celebrate the concept of games (games of all kinds; board games, video games, sporting games) and the joy of playing them with your friends and family. Watching movies or shows while playing games is an added plus.

If you had one million dollars to build anything you wanted, what would you build and why?

An arcade/theatre/library that also has gymnasium attached. A place to work out and veg-out. Or I would build a full-sized, professional zoo. Dubuque should really have one and people would love it.
