New Online Orientation Created for Accepted Students

In response to COVID-19, the College has created a New Student General Online Orientation for accepted students who can access orientation information and complete the process through a single sign-in. The objective is to give new students the opportunity to find answers to any questions they have and complete an orientation checklist before the semester starts in August.

The New Student General Online Orientation is now live on the College’s website. (Faculty and staff members may view the full Online Orientation by contacting Kara Popp, Director of Student Life, at poppk@nicc.edu.) A MyCampus portal video is also available for the College community to view.

Self-Care Tips and Inspiration

by Flannery Cerbin-Bohach, Wellness and Life Stage Program Manager

Self-Care Tip of the Week:

This week’s self care tip is about learning those tech hacks to keep you efficient and reduce headaches. Anything that makes our lives easier, right? Director of Technology Support Services, Julie Uhlenhake, shared a new collaborative channel for sharing tips and tricks for NICC systems and technologies. It’s on Zoom. Follow these instructions to join:

1) Log into your Zoom client
2) Click on the Chat tab
3) Click the +
4) Choose to Join a Channel
5) Join Tips & Tricks

Recipe of the Week:

I may or may not have shared this before: Kale Salad. Regardless, here’s a reminder to try it because this is so nutritionally dense everyone and their aunt should be eating it. Even my father-in-law who used to not eat “green stuff” said it’s good! It’s versatile so you can top it with pretty much anything you would eat on a lettuce salad.

In our household we don’t follow a recipe, but chop the kale into bite sized pieces and add about a teaspoon of salt, two tablespoons of lemon juice and two tablespoons of vinegar (apple, red wine or white) and massage for a couple of minutes and top with our favorite salad dressing. Presto!

Family/Kid Activity of the Week:

Recently my son came home with a rough looking diorama that he made while at his grandparents. It is now where his dinosaurs live and includes a river, green grass and some rocks. This got me thinking about making dioramas when I was a kid. It sounds like a fun family, rainy day activity. Here’s the 4-1-1 on constructing a diorama.

What is your astrological sign and your birthday? Has anything unusual, funny, amazing or inspiring ever happened because of your astrological sign?

My astrological sign is Taurus, and my birthday is May 13. I don’t know if anything unusual has happened because of my sign, but I would say I fit Taurus to a “T” – I can be stubborn at times and don’t like change very much, but am also loyal and kind-hearted.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, in what sport would you compete?

I would compete in gymnastics for sure! I grew up doing gymnastics and competitive cheerleading, so I definitely have a passion for it.

Give your colleagues a suggestion: what are 1, 2, or 3 of your favorite smart phone apps?

I love the Lightroom app for editing pictures!

If you could start all over again, what would be your career choice?

Well, I’m just starting out right now with my career, but if I had to choose a different career, I would maybe do something in the criminal justice field. I’ve always found shows like Criminal Minds very interesting, but I think the reason I didn’t go into that is because I would get kind of scared and probably wouldn't sleep very well. So that career would be a big maybe!

Name one country or region in the world you have never visited that you someday want to visit, serve or spend a vacation?

I would love to vacation in Bora Bora!
