GREEN CORNER

Kara and Piper, our Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinators, will be bringing us regular facts and tips to green your life and make it more sustainable.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American produces nearly five pounds of trash each day, and nearly one ton of garbage each year — and that's not an April Fool's joke! We wanted to know what this looks like for us: how much trash does our NICC Calmar campus produce? Your NICC Sustainability Coordinators will be rolling up their sleeves next Thursday, April 7, for a campus-wide waste audit to answer that question!

What's a waste audit? A waste audit is a survey of trash collected over a certain period of time. Are you wondering why on earth we would sift through all of the campus garbage? Looking at a week's worth of campus garbage by sorting, categorizing and compiling data gives us a snapshot of how much garbage we produce on campus, and shows us how much waste is going into the landfill that could be recycled or disposed of differently. With this information, we can be more effective in our waste reduction campaigns, and NICC students, faculty and staff can take an active role in reducing our campus waste to be part of the solution!

We will be joined by Americorps members and a seasoned waste auditor, Tammy Turner, who helps school districts, community colleges and businesses across Iowa conduct waste audits! We are super grateful for our maintenance and custodial teams for helping us run a smooth waste audit this spring, and to the NICC Operations team for being on board for this project! Send a big thank you their way when next time you see them.

Check out this 2 minute video from North Carolina State University to see what a waste audit actually looks like in practice. Better yet, grab a friend and head down to the Calmar campus Maintenance building on Thursday, April 7 starting at 9:30 a.m. to see how a waste audit works, and join us in sorting and categorizing our campus garbage for a bit (it's really fun, we promise!). Thank you for joining us in making NICC a cleaner, greener place!
